Hawaii has always held a special place on my bucket list, though I often thought I’d visit later in life perhaps on one of my honeymoons, during a mid-life crisis, when I retire, or even with a family that doesn’t exist yet. You know, God willing... Hawaii seemed like a destination best savored for a significant moment in life, much like the characters in season one of The White Lotus: the newlyweds, the family on a bonding trip, and the solo visitor there to spread her mother’s ashes, brilliantly portrayed by Jennifer Coolidge. But when the chance to finally visit Honolulu presented itself, I knew it was time to make that long-awaited trip a reality.
Honolulu, the vibrant capital of the Hawaiian Islands, boasts a population of just over 350,000. The state of Hawaii is made up of eight main islands but it’s O’ahu – the third largest – that is home to the majority of the state’s diverse population. A cultural crossroads rooted in the values and traditions of the Native Hawaiian people, O’ahu offers a unique blend of tropical relaxation and urban excitement. I’d never experienced anything quite like it. Everywhere exudes vacation vibes despite the city’s bustling energy and traffic that rivals Los Angeles or New York City.
Hawaii’s path to becoming part of the United States is fascinating. Originally an independent kingdom, it was annexed by the U.S. in 1898 and became the 50th state in 1959. Although the journey to get there – about a 5–6-hour flight from the West Coast—takes some time, the moment you land, you're welcomed by the warm, tropical breeze that immediately makes the trip worthwhile.

Honolulu’s weather is nothing short of idyllic, with average temperatures hovering around 80°F/25°C year-round. The beaches are postcard-perfect, with soft sands and crystal-clear waters inviting you to relax and unwind. And for LGBTQ+ travelers, Hawaii has long been a welcoming and inclusive destination, with a vibrant gay scene that adds to the island’s appeal.
At the center of it all is the newly opened Romer House Waikiki, an adults-only gem that’s as charming as it is accessible, perfectly located just steps away from all the action. Whether you’re exploring the lively streets of Waikiki, soaking up the sun on its famous beaches, or simply enjoying the laid-back vibe, Romer House offers the ideal home base for your Hawaii adventure. So, if you’re like me and have been putting off that trip to Hawaii, consider this your sign – it’s time to pack your bags and head to paradise.

Dining at Romer House Waikiki is an experience to be savored. On the ground floor, Izakaya 855-Aloha offers a delightful fusion of Japanese-Hawaiian cuisine, perfect for a relaxed evening. While the food is exceptional, the cocktails truly steal the show. Sip on the Ring Ring Ring – a sophisticated mix of Kikori Japanese whiskey and Mr. Black coffee liqueur – or the Call Me Maybe, a vodka-based cocktail with a hint of Lillet Blanc, served with a handwritten note (mine said, ‘If you were words on a page, you’d be fine print’). These expertly crafted cocktails, paired with the lively setting, ensure an unforgettable dining experience.
