Pixel 9 Pro Fold camera: PhoneArena Camera Score, upgrades and changes

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is Google's successor to its original Pixel Fold from last year, and among its multiple changes several of them are related to its camera system. Notice that we call them "changes" though, as some of these are not exactly upgrades compared to last year's model.

From different image sensors for each camera, to a new look for the camera island and a switch to an under-display selfie camera for the main (foldable) display, there's lots to unravel here.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will give a nice blend of camera performance and versatility. While the ultra-wide and selfie cameras lack a bit when it comes to detail and low-light performance, they at least offer very good color accuracy. The main and telephoto cameras, on the other hand, not only offer true-to-life colors but are also pretty good as far as image quality goes, and that was reflected in our PhoneArena Camera Score lab tests.

You can also quickly see that whatever pros the camera system has while taking photos does not translate very well when recording video. The new foldable from Google will do the job for conference calls and a quick video of the family, but we can't say it would win any prizes as far as phone cameras go.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold Camera Upgrades

To be frank, even though it has the word "Pro" in its name, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold does not come with the same level of camera hardware that's present on the new Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL. For the most part, it is stuck with the same specs as its predecessor.

So, if we do see any improvements to the image quality during our PhoneArena Camera Score tests, they will most likely be a result of the new Tensor G4 chipset on board, or Google's computational photography.

At the very least the Pixel 9 Pro Fold gets the Video Boost feature, just like with the other Pro models. However, it is not clear whether the new function of Video Boost that allows users to upscale 4K footage into 8K resolution is also available on the Pro Fold.

What did Google do to the Pixel camera bar?

The new design for the Google's Pixel Fold phone is... interesting.

We are seeing a rather general consensus here at the PhoneArena office when it comes to the new look for the camera module on Google's foldable—it's not very eye-pleasing, to put it mildly. It almost seems to take away from the spirit of Pixel design, which is one of our favorite parts about Pixel phones.

The only cameras that Google has visibly improved are the two selfie ones, which are now both 10MP compared to last year's 8MP and 9.5MP ones. The inner camera has been moved to the top right corner with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

How many cameras does the Pixel 9 Pro Fold have?

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has five cameras in total. Three of those cameras are the main (wide), the ultrawide, and a 5X telephoto at the back; one is the selfie camera that's embedded in the cover display, and the other is the selfie camera embedded in the foldable (inner) display.
