Prohibitive Samsung Galaxy Fold price grows more likely, but at least the release is near
Samsung is almost certainly planning to unveil both the Galaxy S10 lineup and the company’s first-ever foldable device at a special San Francisco event on February 20, but although their target audience might feel similar, a massive price gap is likely to separate the two flagships.
While the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ are only expected to be slightly costlier than the Galaxy S9 and S9+, the Galaxy Fold sounds insanely expensive in a new report from TuttoAndroid.
Local insiders tell the Italian website the groundbreaking foldable product could set back its earliest adopters as much as €2,000. That equates to a whopping $2,275 or so, but as always, a direct conversion like that doesn’t paint a reliable picture of what’s to come.
For instance, the Galaxy Note 9 typically starts at around €1,030 in markets like Italy, while fetching only $1,000 or so stateside. Thus, if TuttoAndroid’s inside information proves legit, it’s safe to expect a price tag of around $2,000 for the Samsung Galaxy Fold in the US.
That falls pretty much perfectly in line with a recent rumor anticipating a device twice as expensive as an everyday “premium phone.” It’s also not too far off a mark speculated for the British market back in November.
Those willing to pay a small fortune to encourage true mobile innovation (and score bragging rights in the process) should be happy to hear the Galaxy Fold is today also tipped for a commercial release in Italy in late March or early April.
