About Poetry Magazine

For more than 110 years, Poetry magazine has been a monthly gathering space for poets and readers. The magazine publishes contemporary poetry and prose, primarily in English, and translations from contributors all over the world. In addition to its print publication, Poetry’s entire digital archive of over 1,200 issues is available for free, and content from 2013 to present is available in our digital app. Poetry has been published in Chicago since its founding in 1912.

“Every sport, every little industry requires its own corner, its own voice, that it may find its friends, greet them, welcome them.”—Harriet Monroe, founding editor of Poetry in “The Motive of the Magazine,” published in the first issue in October 1912

A century later, the corner Monroe spoke of is a large and vibrant ecosystem devoted to supporting poets and expanding the art form. With the support of the Poetry Foundation, Poetry seeks to connect voices in contemporary poetry with readers from all backgrounds for the next hundred years.

Current Editorial Approach

“We want the magazine to question even as it provides respite, to be a space where every kind of poetry can be read, heard, and received with the curiosity and wonder it deserves.”
—Adrian Matejka, Poetry magazine editor

Poetry magazine remains committed to being as innovative and collaborative as it was when it first started in 1912. The editors have been working to fill gaps in Poetry’s archive and elsewhere by working with outside curators to highlight poets whose work has not received the attention it deserves. This has led to the publication of folios on Margaret Danner, William J. Harris, Bert Meyers, Carolyn Marie Rodgers, Diana Solís, and many other poets.

Poetry has a long history of publishing new work by award-winning writers alongside poets who are early in their careers. Poets whose work has recently appeared in Poetry include:
