Harry Potter trivia game show hosted by Helen Mirren is a very real thing in 2021

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses feels like something out of 2012. Timed to the 20th anniversary of the first Potter movie, the four-night event is a game show centered around Harry Potter trivia that sorts contestants into Houses and features celebrity guests straight from the Potter movies (and also ... Pete Davidson). The prizes include a $1,000 shopping spree at the Harry Potter New York store, tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a trip to Harry Potter: The Exhibition, a three-day three-night trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando, and an advance screening of next April’s Fantastic Beasts: The Secret of Dumbledore. And that’s not all — those at home can join in with a companion digital event on the official Wizarding World website, with three trivia challenges debuting every Friday from Nov. 26 to Dec. 10.

If this show had come out at the height of Pottermania — right on the heels of the last movie, when the fandom was hungry for Potter content — it would’ve exploded. As it stands, seeing someone go “I’m pretty sure I’m as Gryffindor as you get” in 2021 is a bit of a time warp. That’s not even taking into account the contention surrounding Harry Potter in the wake of J.K. Rowling’s controversial comments on the trans community.

Hosted by award-winning actress Helen Mirren — who, for the record, has never appeared in a Harry Potter movie — Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses kicks off in late November, with Gryffindor versus Hufflepuff. The next round pits Slytherin against Ravenclaw, which if you ask me the seeding seems messed up because a trivia match between ambitious Slytherins and smart-ass Ravenclaws would’ve made for a more interesting second round, but I digress.

The show will premiere on Nov. 28 at 8:00 pm on TBS and Cartoon Network, with new episodes each Sunday. The season will eventually make its way to HBO Max early next year.
