There is no ideal client. Therapists must adapt to a broad variety of clients. who present a broad variety of issues, needs, goals and openness to therapy. Consequently, a competent therapist must be extremely flexible. Such flexibility must be assiduously cultivated on a life-long basis. Creativity must come to fore in this respect.

Somatic experiencing, which taps into the body's hidden wisdom, lends itself to this undertaking. In contrast, solution-focused therapy, which is largely a top-down cognitive approach, enables clients to structure their emotions.
Crucial invitation to the client: There is nothing wrong with you that cannot be fixed by what is right with you. Empathy, whether emotional, cognitive or motor, must be consciously and continually cultivated by therapists through meditation and as broad as possible an experience of life. Relating to children, indigenous peoples and animals is facilitative.
