Therapy is a place to get curious about areas in your life where you might feel stuck, depressed, or isolated. In our work together, I strive to create a space that builds capacity for you to change by exploring your relationships, both past and present. I hope to support you in arriving at a deeper sense of connection to the world around you and the people in it.

Let's face it, life isn't easy. How many times have you repressed your thoughts, feelings, and emotions? Do you even know what victory feels like? Are you isolated and alone, or in need of emotional support? Are you having difficulty adjusting to civilian life, or just life in general? Do you even know where to start?

I am here to listen, to be on your team, and to support you as you cultivate the insights that will help you to access your wisest self. I believe that change is made possible by developing true self-compassion and self-acceptance. Are you curious about how your exploration of your inner experiences could deepen your relationship to yourself and the world around you? Hi, I’m Jess. I’m a queer, black clinician who believes that we are all simultaneously imperfect and good, that our relationships shape who we are, and that we have all of the wisdom we need to heal. In my work as a therapist I’ve had the honor of sitting beside my clients as they cultivate curiosity and compassion for themselves, repair relational and systemic wounds, and recognize their ability to shape change in their lives.

Therapy is a powerful tool of discovery that helps you see yourself, your relationships, and the world through new eyes. It is exercise for the mind that helps us become emotionally flexible and prepared to weather the storms that life inevitably brings. Usually things work, until they don’t. And people come to therapy when things have stopped working. Through careful and gentle inquiry, we can usually unravel what isn’t working, and help build a new way forward. Often the fit between therapist and patient is the big factor in therapy effectiveness. So, how you feel when you talk to the prospective therapist is an important guide.

I believe that healing happens in relationship with others, and that therapy can be an excellent place to begin this practice. I know how tough it can be to have a rift in a romantic relationship, a friendship, or even in the relationship with ourselves. Additionally, I believe that trauma-informed, Queer affirming, and anti-racist methodologies are not only necessary but go hand-in-hand with radical growth. My primary focuses are on couples therapy, gender and sexuality, and folks struggling through rigid mindsets such as religious trauma and anxiety.

My work is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and connection. I come to clinical social work with a deeply held belief that all people are deserving of care and I have seen how a safe and collaborative therapeutic relationship can offer support when that care has been challenged. I know that part of healing means acknowledging and working beyond the systems that have caused harm and that this involves actively employing an anti-oppressive lens that refuses to pathologize trauma survival. I understand my clients are the experts on their experiences and I am committed to creating a practice that affirms people of all backgrounds.

Somewhere along the way, you lost the passion you had for each other and now you're just roommates going through the motions. Therapy offers an opportunity for cultivating safety, security, and steadiness within ourselves and in our relationships. Through a warm and patient presence, gentle curiosity, and deep compassion, I hope to offer you a sturdy container within which you can practice vulnerability and explore a full range of feelings. I hold an awareness that our pain, grief, anger, joy, and pleasure live in our bodies, and I believe paying attention to what happens in our bodies can increase our insight and agency. Integrating somatic and mindfulness practices into our work together supports this connection between body and mind.

“Grief is akin to praise; it is how the soul recounts the depth to which someone has touched our lives.” Loss intersects with many challenging life events, extending beyond death to include breakups, career shifts, exploration of gender and identity, estrangement, and more. I hold the belief that everyone requires support at times, and it takes a whole lot to seek it out. I understand the discomfort of vulnerability, yet it's precisely why I engage in this work. I recognize the challenges but also the potential for fostering deeper connections and a more fulfilling existence.

I have always known that helping others is my purpose. My own personal life challenges and feeling that I was in a dark place pushed me a strong desire to understand myself and my feelings at a deeper level. I realized that I wanted to leave the world better than I had found it, and I wanted to do so by helping others to heal. My own healing journey brought me to help others through therapy. I use a strengths-based approach to help my clients ease the pain that they are experiencing, by not only being there and offering an empathetic ear, but by helping them to find the joy in life that they may have thought would be lost forever.

Update 9/17/24: I am seeing clients in person! Welcome, this is not your average therapy practice. Have you been thinking that self care is overrated? Professional support and community care are available. I match new and long term clients to groups that offer affordable support on a weekly or biweekly basis. I refer to a close network of trusted healers and medical professionals. I maintain a lending library of books that complement our work. No therapy is value neutral and I welcome your political analysis.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in 19143?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
