I work with a wide variety of clients in individual, couples, group and consultation formats.I provide a relationship that promotes respectful, direct expression of our unique human frailties and strengths be they happy, angry, fearful or sad. Psychotherapy is a potent elixir for change. The 'contents' of life provides for each of us at times a 'wild-ride', a 'lazy day', or somewhere in between. I help my clients with the 'process' of life to stay connected with their Self and others. If all goes well in the individual or couples therapy, most of my clients matriculate into a group psychotherapy process to further their growth.

A number of things can get in the way of us having the life that we want. My role in therapy is to help clients think through strategies to better enable them to navigate the transitions and the difficult circumstances they encounter to ultimately become the person they want to be. Therapy is about living an authentic life by taking action on the things that matter most to us, living in the direction of what we see as valuable, and engaging fully in what we do. Let me help you become "unstuck" from old patterns and develop the tools to live a more satisfying life. You do not have to figure this out on your own.

I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults. As a former high school coach and counselor, I provide a unique approach that is both authentic and encouraging in nature. I work best with clients that are open-minded and adaptable as well as introspective and contemplative. Sense of humor plays an essential role in developing the rapport I have with my clients. Once that is established, I make sure to carefully listen to each individual's unique story, assist in planning ahead for challenges, channel strengths, and collaboratively track progress together.

I work with individuals, couples, and families, focusing on relationship building, conflict and anger management, and coping with grief and loss. I help couples create a safe and nurturing bond that allows them to become close again and heal. No matter the issue that brings a couple, individual, or family into my office, they will all be learning a new way to look at relationship and be introduced to a toolkit of skills essential to staying in conversation and connection.

The populations with whom I work are adults, children, and couples. My primary modalities are Two-Person Psychology & Relational Theory, with which I focus on the importance of the therapist being a part of the therapeutic process, and working with folks from the beginning of treatment until the end; never wanting the client to feel they are alone on this journey. I hope my process helps my clients feel confident in themselves so that they can find the courage and fortitude to change, which is the hardest thing a person can do.

I have more than 25 years of experience in Clinical Psychology divided between both sides of the Atlantic. My professional and personal experience helps me relate to the culturally diverse and globally minded population of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Over the years, after graduating from a mostly research oriented graduate program in Psychology, I pursued intensive training in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Psychodrama, Group and Family Psychotherapy, and Psychoanalysis. I am certain that Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, correctly applied, can lead to the most dramatic and long lasting changes in patient's lives.

I am a Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW) currently practicing within the District of Columbia. Children, teens, and young adults are the foundation for our future society. This population and their families are the bulk of the services that I provide. My therapeutic sessions focus on relieving stress by simply solving problems. My approach is to be honest, direct, while creating an environment for openness and collaborating with clients on their goals. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the theoretical approach of preference. I believe that everyone can change, and that your journey should not be compared to anyone else.

As a psychotherapist, I have more than 30 years experience providing clients a safe, non-judgmental environment where issues can be explored and difficult feelings can be identified and expressed. I specialize in working with individuals and couples whose difficulties in early relationships have created corresponding difficulties in the present, including feeling locked into negative patterns of relating, depression, anxiety, and loneliness. I provide my clients the opportunity to learn new more effective ways of communicating and relating that in turn can lead to positive changes in their lives.

A great deal of my work is partnering with individuals who are experiencing a lack of purpose or direction in their life. This could be related to historical wounds that seem to continually resurface, a sense of feeling stuck or trapped in behavior or relationships that leave you unfulfilled, or feeling a lack of direction and focused energy. Experiencing personal agency to achieve what you want, how you want and knowing you have the capacity to achieve this, is what I foster in a therapeutic relationship. It is my personal belief that there are no limits to what is possible.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
