When appropriate, I may suggest and introduce the use of specific techniques from other theoretical orientations as a means of helping to manage particularly disruptive symptoms while supporting engagement in vital activities.
Psychotherapy is a powerful process through which we can learn about the ways we attempt to manage difficult circumstances, feelings, and conflicts through the lens of our experiences and relationships both past and present. Therapy is an opportunity for individuals to develop their own understanding of how they came to be who they are- and why. This often provides valuable information about how we might meet present day challenges across the broad de mands of everyday life. Therapy can be very effective for most people, and I make every effort to create a welcoming and collaborative environment.

I believe that fit between therapist and client is one of the most important factors in counseling. My style is to adapt my approach to the client's personality and needs. Some people want or respond well to a lot of feedback, suggestions, and structured goals, while others need a good listener more than anything else. I strive to put the client first in developing the treatment plan. I have extensive experience in treating a broad range of issues and in psychological assessment. Feel free to call first to discuss your needs if you are not sure that I'm the right therapist for you.

Are you feeling stuck? I find that when we're stuck, it's often because we have feelings, thoughts or we act in ways that result in us "getting in our own way." While psychiatric medications can be helpful for getting back on track, they're often not the full solution. I believe the best thing you can do for yourself is to find someone with whom you can clarify your thoughts and feelings privately and without judgment. Examining what's going on inside us and working through internal conflicts is how we overcome whatever may be holding us back. By reaching out for help, you're taking the first steps toward this goal.

To help others, I believe that three traits are essential: competence, caring, and integrity. I continuously hone my competence by updating my skills and keeping up with developments in my field. In addition, I put a strong emphasis on personal growth and cultivating my relationships with others, believing that by living a full and meaningful life, I have more to offer my clients. I care deeply about my clients, admire their strengths, cheer their victories, and resonate with their disappointments. In terms of integrity, I commit to an approach that is kind, straight-forward,and respectful.

Some paths to pursuing growth can leave you feeling labeled, picked apart, or wondering what's "wrong" with you. But I believe you are whole and complete, just as you are. Healing is a journey not toward fixing perceived damages, but toward rediscovering the wholeness that has been there all along. In our therapy sessions, I'll walk alongside you on that journey. I bring a spiritual perspective into the room that bears witness to your inherent wisdom. Through the exploration of your inner world, we'll partner in your deep healing and spiritual freedom. This is so much more than a temporary "band-aid" approach.

Are you feeling disconnected, depressed, lost or confused with your life? With de manding relationships, work, school, and other responsibilities, it is rare that we feel we can save any energy for our own mental and emotional needs. In therapy, I foster safe, confidential, and supportive relationships so you may become an insightful observer and active participant in your life. I work within a mindfulness based perspective in which I place an emphasis on the here and now, focusing on what you want to address.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
