“Perspective is the way we see things when we look at them from a certain distance, and it allows us to appreciate their true value.” -Rafael E. Pino. It takes courage to seek help when suffering and facing challenges in life. I strive to create a strong alliance with each person by fostering trust and open communication. Each individual’s journey is unique, and therapy can be a collaborative healing journey.

In my practice I focus on those who have been feeling "stuck." You may have been to see therapists before, but the core problem doesn't seem to go away. The core of many issues related to depression, anxiety, and other life challenges come in how we process and manage emotions. When feeling "emotionally uncomfortable," some of us might lash out and others of us might shut down. The type that shuts down might get very quiet, or say everything is fine when it is not fine, and be very uncomfortable with the idea that others might know what is going on in their heads. While this can keep us feeling safe, it also can feel isolating.

Hello, my name is Alena Kanter. I am credentialed as an Advanced Practice Social Worker and love working with children and pre-teens. I have two years of experience as a school-based therapist. Most of my clients came to me due to behavioral concerns at home and at school, usually stemming from trauma, big life changes and transitions. Many children struggle with big emotions and how to express and process them. I help my clients with coping mechanisms, processing their trauma, safe expression of feelings, and being able to regulate their bodies and minds.

Seeking therapy is both an admirable and courageous first step in your journey towards wellness as defined by you. Whether you are facing a difficult life transition, wish to manage distressing mental health symptoms, or would like help identifying and breaking free from patterns that are interfering with your personal growth, you deserve an emotionally safe and judgement-free space to explore any and all facets of your life. Each client has unique needs, therefore there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health.

For many individuals, verbalizing their thoughts and emotions can be challenging and sometimes impossible. Art therapy allows clients to explore experiential techniques with new and familiar art materials in a judgment-free space. I trust that art and the creative process have the power to ignite empowerment and bring about positive change in people’s lives. No prior experience in art-making is required! Additionally, there are no expectations for creating art.

Life can be challenging and I believe people are resilient. I use a holistic, strength-based approach to meet children, adolescents and adults where they are at and create a safe, non-judgmental space to work through hardships.

Asking for help is hard, and it’s when we feel heard, seen, and understood, that healing and growth are most accessible. Complex trauma, negative moods and emotions, and strained interpersonal relationships can all have a profound impact on our ability to feel well and engage fully with the world around us. Despite these troubles, we all have an incredible capacity for growth and change. I believe that healing is not a one-size-fits-all experience, so I work with each person individually to create a plan that works to best meet their unique needs.
