Critics Consensus

It'll be too disturbing -- and meandering -- for some, but Dogtooth is as disturbing and startlingly original as modern filmmaking gets.

John Hartl Seattle Times To put it mildly, "Dogtooth" is not for everyone, but it can grow on you even if you think you've rejected its influence. Rated: 3/4 Mar 10, 2011 Full Review Peter Howell Toronto Star This is the second feature for Lanthimos, and it's a leap from his well-received debut Kinetta. He skilfully doles out tantalizing pieces of information, keeping the viewer in a constant state of suspense and wonder. Rated: 4/4 Jan 29, 2011 Full Review Jennie Punter Globe and Mail The true dark-horse nominee among this year's foreign-language Oscar contenders, Dogtooth leaves bite marks that stick around long after you are released from its grip. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 28, 2011 Full Review Angelos Koutsourakis PopMatters By systematically abusing the language system, Dogtooth confronts the postmodern speculative dichotomy between reality and fiction. Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Ray Pride Newcity The inexplicable is the everyday and the everyday of these characters lack our reason. What Lanthimos does just right is insure that there are many metaphors and there are none: it’s an X-ray... of fears about society and control. Rated: 9/10 Sep 22, 2022 Full Review Jason Adams My New Plaid Pants A really good lay. Jan 10, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Ricardo d É um filme alegórico com muitas mensagens, que podemos extrair dos contextos e debater. Temos muito boas interpretações. Acho apenas que a edição poderia ser melhorada, e o fim não me agrada. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/24 Full Review Ian S How, why, what...this film just engages on another level. Have watched it on repeat, the mundane but bizarre is enthralling for me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Lars N Yet another ponderous film from Lanthimos, that will engage the viewer long after credit roll, even though the pacing sometimes made it hard while actually watching the movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Jeremy S If you're wondering if it's for you it's probably not. If you like the sound of the set up, you should love it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Dylan S Suspenseful, lingering, yet eerily familiar. It stabs at the darker side of societal isolation, normality, and the desolation of impressionable youth. While it can be hard to watch, "Dogtooth" provides a discomforting yet potent cinematic experience to those who can stomach it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Kurtis E You know what's a better movie than this movie? A written synopsis of this movie. I love a slow burn, but this was hard to sit through. So many long drawn out arthouse shots without the relief of anything exciting to break up the monotony. That feels weird to write as this movie is full of tits, abuse, and incest, but it just feels uncomfortable. Not uncomfortable-but-fun, more like that feeling you get when you sit through a movie that didn't age well with someone you just met. Anyway, maybe I just need to familiarize myself with this director's works as this may be on par. "Shocking" is the word that keeps popping up in reviews for this film, and maybe that would feel appropriate to me if this film had come out in the 70's and I were viewing it through the lens of 70's sensibilities, but that's simply not the case. I would be down to maybe give this a rewatch in the future; perhaps it's one of those films with an "acquired taste." The final ~15 minutes were pretty entertaining, however.
