A wildlife volunteer on an uninhabited island off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.'s most exciting and singular filmmakers.

Critics Consensus

If its story's mysteries are ultimately less compelling than they might seem, Enys Men's retro aesthetic and intriguingly abstract visuals make this a chilly treat for horror fans.

Adam Graham Detroit News The tedious folk horror tale Enys Men is a case of plenty of folk but no horror. Rated: C- Apr 6, 2023 Full Review Michael O'Sullivan Washington Post It’s a fever dream in which the past and present are confused, along with plant and animal, the living and the dead, and, ultimately, the meaning of this troubled vision. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 4, 2023 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com I was riveted by every moment of this haunting weird film. "Enys Men" made me legitimately uneasy. Rated: 3.5/4 Mar 31, 2023 Full Review Daniel Allen Loud and Clear Reviews Atmospheric and paced like a scattershot dream, Enys Men is a psychological horror that is unnerving but also compelling Rated: 4/5 Jul 25, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper In Their Own League No one is making movies the way Mark Jenkin is, and cinema is all the better for it! Sagnik Nath Nothing much to offer Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/23 Full Review Kyle M Scenic experimentalism is metaphorical expressionism only gripping the gist of the folk “horror” with an effective pattern that brews from questionably bland to something unsettling, enabled by the aesthetically stark visuals to colorfully saturate “The Lighthouse” surreal grip, nothing else. (B-) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/20/24 Full Review George R I’m the type of person who can sit through and enjoy slow burner horror films. They’re great. However, that CAN’T be said for this movie. I had to force myself to sit through this, because I was already done with it within the first half hour of absolute NOTHING going on. Rarely do I ever walk out or pass on a movie partway through it, but this is one I wish I had. Nothing happens, and whatever does happen visually doesn’t actually add to any story (because there isn’t one either). Enys Men’s rating from critics is truly baffling to me. It’s a beautifully shot, retro-style movie, but that’s the BEST compliment I can give it and that can only take you so far. For me the worst quality any horror film can have is be boring, as well as lacking any sort of entertainment value, and Enys Men has ALL of that. Just don’t bother. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Robert A I feel like a website like rotten tomatoes should definitely remove comments that give 5 stars to this movie (or 4) because they are liars 100% to improve the quality of reviews. Bad movie that is just a wasted of your time. Don’t give more budget Mark Jenkin please, thanks Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review prawnda s i cannot say a single thing about this movie other than that it was unwatchably boring. the 16mm film does the project no favors, and it seems that the director assumed the retro film grain automatically adds meaning or nuance to a shot. i'm reminded of "we're all going to the world's fair", another film where absolutely nothing happens, and the creator also expected us to find meaning in something far too esoteric and sloppily arranged to resonate with the viewer.
