Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard The characters in this movie are charmers. They've got me so well-trained, I'm even looking forward to HTTYD3. Rated: 3/5 Jul 11, 2014 Full Review Leslie Felperin Radio Times It has a richness that's highly compelling, especially in the way it explores the complex relationship between man and beast. Rated: 4/5 Jul 11, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The filmmakers borrow freely from Avatar, Sword In The Stone and even Brave but they bring enough vigour and imagination to their storytelling to get away with it. Rated: 4/5 Jul 10, 2014 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) The How to Train Your Dragon series is one of DreamWorks Animation’s proudest achievements, and the second film is a darker, more mature and just as gripping as the first. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film What Dean DeBlois was able to do with the first How to Train Your Dragon was just incredible and has become big favorite of mine since then. There was some huge expectations for How to Train Your Dragon 2 and boy did Deblois deliver. Rated: A Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Brendan Cassidy InSession Film Boasting beautiful animation, a great script, wonderful voice talent, and one of the year’s best musical scores, this earns its dragon’s wings buy not only improving on its predecessor, but it makes the first film even better. Allie F I really loved the first movie - there were so many memorable parts! It felt like this one took a bit to warm up to things, and the sense of awe and cuteness didn't quite hit me as much as in the first movie. But still lovable and entertaining! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/22 Full Review Audience Member Absolute beautiful storytelling, characters, and animation. Definitely one of my favourite movies, if not my favourite. Must see!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review TROY S There's a lot going on, but it's remarkably compelling and emotional, as well as funny and a blast to watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Matthew L How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a worthy sequel that lives up to its predecessor. Much like before, it has wonderful story, themes, animation, voice acting, and music. How to Train Your Dragon 2 once again puts the theme of friendship and trust to a test on the main characters, except this time, it wasn't about vikings viewing the dragons as a threat. Rather, this time the story introduces two new antagonists, Drago Bludvist and his Bewilderbeast. The theme of leadership is also introduced. In this film, everyone in Berk now lives in harmony with dragons, including its chief, Stoick. However, elsewhere, Dragon Bludvist intends to be the dragon alpha by forcefully controlling dragons with his Bewilderbeast. This later puts conflict when he attacks the dragons' nest where Valka (Hiccup's long lost mother) and her Bewilderbeast resides in. Though Hiccup, his parents and his friends fought hard, Drago uses his Bewilderbeast to k*ll Valka's, and took control of every dragon in the area, including Toothless. As Toothless turns against Hiccup, the latter tried calling out to his dragon to no avail. As a result, Stoick had to shield Hiccup before Toothless could fire at him, resulting in Stoick's death. Though Hiccup was furious at Toothless, his mother convinced him that it wasn't Toothless' fault. With their dragons gone, Hiccup, his mother and friends rode baby dragons back to Berk (the baby dragons are unaffected by the Bewilderbeast due to their young age) where Drago (now riding on Toothless) and his Bewilderbeast had attacked. Hiccup confronts the three and tried getting Toothless back. Hiccup appealed to Toothless by saying that it was not Toothless' fault and that Toothless would never hurt him, saying that Toothless is his best friend. Due to their friendship and trust, Toothless broke free from the Bewilderbeast, and both teamed up to take down Drago and his Bewilderbeast. Toothless unleashes a new ability while protecting Hiccup from the Bewilderbeast, and fought back which causes the previously controlled dragons to return to their original. Hiccup then proclaimed to Drago that it is not by using force to be an alpha, but by actual bravery and care. After defeating Drago and his Bewilderbeast, Hiccup now has the responsibility as Berk's new chief. How to Train Your Dragon 2 may have a darker tone to it, but it still keeps the film right with its themes and emotional story. (I am literally crying while writing this review) Like its predecessor, it was once again snubbed at the Oscars, (losing to Big Hero 6, which is inferior) but at least it won the Golden Globe Awards and Annie Awards for Best Animated Feature Film. That said, I love How to Train Your Dragon 2 for making an even more emotional story and not forgetting the themes of its predecessor. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Nick R Although the original is still a little better, 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' is a strong sequel that improves it's animation and expands it's world in all of the right ways. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Jace E What a powerful sequel to one of the best animated movies of all time. HTTYD2 is a worthy follow-up to the first film and does a fantastic job of building on the story. Hiccup's glow-up is top notch, as is the evolution of the people of Berk, particularly when it comes to the relationship with the dragons. The voice acting is excellent, the animation is superb and the emotional pull is stronger than ever. I truly believe that the bond between Hiccup and Toothless is unparalleled. I'm trying to think of a stronger relationship between two (non-romantic) characters and I can't think of one. The image of Hiccup diving after Toothless during the finale is up there with the "Leap of Faith" visual from Spider-Verse. The movie ended and I applauded with tears in my eyes. I love this film, I adore this franchise and I am anxious to see what is in store in HTTYD3. Best Character: Toothless Best Quote: "Men who kill without reason cannot be reasoned with." - Stoick Best Scene: Hiccup's leap of faith Best Piece of Score: "Together We Map the World" Best Song: "Where No One Goes" Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
