ron F The most unromantic, trashy, vulgar ending: a handwritten poster that includes the word “motherfucker.” Do these people even know what that means? Romantic as a bowel movement. If you're going to make a movie where the characters spend virtually every minute lying to themselves and to everyone around them, you have to create people we care about at least a little bit. I immediately think of MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING - Julia Roberts spends the whole movie being dishonest but we feel for her character and her predicament. The characters here are cookie-cutter caricatures, and I didn't care what happened to them. That is death for a romantic movie. I was particularly disgusted with how Barnet's character is treated and basically thrown away after the climax. And certain characters have 180 degree attitude changes with no explanation whatsoever. There isn't a cliche this movie doesn't touch - we have the sassy best friend, the stern boss, the wacky grandma... This movie is so tired it even steals scenes from other movies. There is one truly inspired moment - a hilarious Christmas caroling scene in which a controversial holiday song is given a ME TOO-era twist. That was absolutely charming! Otherwise, when you get down to the nuts and bolts of the story here, we find uncharismatic performances, unappealing characters and lots of selfish and idiotic behavior.
