Muppet Treasure Island

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though less Muppet-centric than the original trilogy, Muppet Treasure Island is an energetic, cheerful take on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure, with typically solid gags.

Dale R The story of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island as only the Muppets could tell it. Starring Tim Curry as Long John Silver and Kevin Bishop as Jim Hawkins. Unlike the Muppet Christmas Carol there are a few more major changes to the story to make this a comedy featuring the Muppets. One of the best changes, in my opinion, was making Ms. Piggy the castaway on the island who had a previous relationship with Captain Smollett, played by Kermit. As a musical, the songs are hit and miss. Maybe it was because Tim Curry sang it, but “Professional Pirate” was my favorite. A miss example would be “Cabin Fever”, the song itself is great, but you could take it out of the movie and it wouldn’t be missed. The jokes are also very hit or miss. The key to telling this story is the relationship between Hawkins and Silver. This movie doesn’t deliver on this point as they don’t have enough scenes together to build any believable relationship. Thus, I wouldn’t recommend this movie unless you’re a big Muppet fan. If you want to see a more accurate retelling, check out Disney’s Treasure Island or the animated Treasure Planet. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Craig W Curry on absolute fire here as always - really holds the film together - underrated film Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Audience Member As much as it’s great to see muppets in this adaptation, it’s not a well put together movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/02/24 Full Review azura r My favorite movie! Witty, heart warming, good music, the actors are great and, as always, so are the Muppets (Gonzo and Rizzo take center stage). Wish I could give it more stars. I would love for the Muppets to make a couple more classic books into movies Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review David W It's got the Muppets and the wonderful Tim Curry as Long John Silver, if that doesn't sell it to you then you have no soul. Up there with Christmas Carol as the best of the Muppets in movie form. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/03/23 Full Review Raven M Funny and delightful entertaining classic .
