Critics Consensus

Shrek the Third has pop culture potshots galore, but at the expense of the heart, charm, and wit that made the first two Shreks classics.

Deborah Ross The Spectator The first two movies had heart, charm, wit, originality, parfait and, most unusually for an animation, characters you could properly care about. This, though, has very little of any of the above, and it breaks my heart. Blu B It starts out solid with some pretty good ideas but it just slowly slips and can't keep up the momentum it started with. It's alright overall. Nothing is broken about it but nothing particulary good outside of that one joke with Pinnocchio trying not to lie which is easily the best thing. Biggest problem is it just isn't funny. It's not cringe worthy jokes or anything but it falls flat 95% of the time with surface level stuff and slap stick that is just ok. Second, Arthur is just....kind of lame. There is nothing remarkable about him, he has no character arc and just becomes King out of nowhere at the end, and half the time the film isn't even about him. This can't decide if Shrek, Fionna, Charming, or Arthur is the main focus and the results are as you'd expect. It works ok enough thanks to the fact it's barely 80 minutes without credits though. Finally there are some scenes that just feel out of place AND unfunny. Mainly the High School and Wizard scenes which is a BIG chunk of the middle and first half. The setting and humor just aren't Shrek. I guess I'd also add at times this somehow feels lazy as well especially in the opening parts. It feels like were just going through he motions sometimes from the voice acting to the expressions on characters animated faces. It has good ideas but it isn't executed in a funny and focused manner that fits what Shrek is. Skip This and stay with I & II. I enjoyed the showcasing of womanly empowerment that has been a staple in these movies. Through the plot loses itself a little throughout the movie, all in all I would say this is a must watch for young veiwers.
