What to Know

Critics Consensus

Society of the Snow brings masterful technical skill to bear on its tale of real-life tragedy, but none of that spectacle comes at the expense of its simple, powerful message.

Audience Says

An outstanding recreation of a grueling true story, Society of the Snow isn't the first film to dramatize these events, but it might be the best.

Valerie This was beautifully shot and gave a poignant and non-sensationalized account of this true story. The acting was incredible and I appreciated how they acknowledged every person in the crash. I hope the survivors felt that this successfully represented their experience. Seeing the pictures of the real survivors at the end made me cry, plus the scene where the father is reading the names of the survivors and his son is one of them. *tears* Bravo to this excellent film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review danish Inspiring. Beautifully shot. Oscar winner. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/24/23 Full Review Ted C super good, we cried watching this Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/24 Full Review D B Society of the Snow is a gut-wrenching look at the fragility of our human existence. When all is stripped away, the cast shows us that compassion, the grit to sacrifice ourselves to help the other is what remains, innate and undaunted. Each loss in the movie tugs at our heartstrings, while each small victory is a moment of great joy. The movie is a journey, but one I gladly undertook. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/24 Full Review Julian S This harrowing true story was adapted into a Hollywood film in 1993. While that version is good, this Spanish-language adaptation is arguably the most powerful. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review Jace E I don't think I've ever seen a survival story as captivating as "Society of the Snow". I could not take my eyes off the screen, even when truly disturbing and terrifying moments passed. The film does an incredible job at capturing the horror of the crash, the difficulty of the cold and hunger, and every other survival element these boys faced. The performances are emotional, the sound is excellent (the snow, the chewing, etc.) and the hair/makeup is perfectly done. If you can, watch this movie in Spanish with English subtitles. It is worth it to feel the performances of each of the actors in their native tongue. When the movie ended, I wanted to see title cards explaining what happened to each survivor. After closer inspection, I realized that the purpose of this story was to honor the living along with the dead. Front to back, a great movie and an incredible story. Best Character: Nando (Honorable mention to Roberto) Best Quote: "There is no greater love than that which gives one's life for one's friends." - Numa Best Scene: Javier's Story. Best Piece of Score: "Found" Note: I didn't realize it while watching the movie, but as I'm listening to Michael Giacchino's score right now, I think it's one of the best of 2023.
