Avatar: The Last Airbender serves as a solid live-action entry point into the beloved franchise, although it only sporadically recaptures the magic of its source material.

Noëlle D. Lilley Chicago Reader It's undeniable that Netflix's adaptation is a reminder of how much we missed the world of Avatar. It's still so much fun, and there's still so much to learn with messages that ring even more true today... Mar 1, 2024 Full Review Devan Coggan Entertainment Weekly The result is a charming but imperfect adaptation that vastly improves upon the 2010 film — but never soars quite as high as the original animated show. Rated: B- Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Laura Babiak Observer The Netflix adaptation is far from a disaster, but it doesn’t master the elements that made the original so good. Feb 23, 2024 Full Review Seb Jenkins Loud and Clear Reviews Entire episodes and storylines were lost along the way, but I think the Netflix team stayed true to the general spirit of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper Movies We Texted About It’s easy to see how this would appeal to old and new audiences alike, and perhaps it’s a net positive on the whole. Yet, for every impressive quality, fundamental flaws limit what it can achieve. Rated: 3/5 Jul 19, 2024 Full Review Jericho Tadeo The Asian Cut It’s not the original anime, which is fine, but it’s also not like M. Night Shyamalan’s disastrous The Last Airbender, which is a huge relief. Rated: 7/10 Jul 12, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Emotional D Worth a watch , great for family tv if you have kids it’s great for them and they can’t get enough of it Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Joseph R Im not feeling zucco or his sister azulah. Uncle iro and team avatar are working well for me. Sacka is a lot more humanized vs his comic relief role which i appreciate. It's such an ambitious project to convert to this format. I think season 2 will take a ton of lessons learned and spin a wonderful follow-up. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review Corbin M The writers rushed to the main plot and left characterization behind, such a shame. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review Junyi L A massive disappointment. Weak storytelling and lamentable characterization. I cannot imagine who this adaptation is meant for: those who haven't watched the animated series would find it confusing, and those who have would feel like their childhoods are ruined. I find the most issue with the characterization of Katara. She is meant to be THE most important character, emblematic of the spirits of care and resilience. She is the narrator of the animated series and has learned to bring change when not even the avatar is ready. She is a true matriarch and idealist. However, the adaptation turns her into a passive, innocent, immature little girl who needs to be protected and enlightened. Screw this. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Benjamin B Zuko and Iroh are carrying this show so god damn hard. There are iffy and weird moments that I think the show didn't handle as well, where some of the magic of the animated series seems lost but overall the entire season was very enjoyable. My kids loved it, my wife and I loved it. Can't wait for more. The Avatar is very close to my heart and I couldn't really bring myself to like most of the modern stuff that happened with it. This series however is doing a heck of a lot more right than wrong and I'm sure they will improve for the better in coming seasons. Here's hoping that Azula steps up as the amazing, cold blooded, perfectionist, scheming killing machine that she is in the animated series. The whole show may or may not stand and fall with her performance for me. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Jack H Though some of the magic of the original series is lost in making it live action, the thrill and compelling story are still there. Plus they brought back the cabbage merchant! I'm hopeful that seasons 2 and 3 will patch up the mistakes of the first season to finish this series strong.
