Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for CBS All Access, the story of "Star Trek: Discovery" begins roughly a decade before Captain Kirk's five-year mission -- as portrayed in the original "Star Trek" from the 1960s -- and a century before the events of "Star Trek: Enterprise." The series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they encounter new worlds and civilizations, delving into familiar themes and expanding upon an incident that has been talked about within the franchise's universe, but never fully explored. Eric Deggans NPR This show has boldly tried re-inventing and updating Trek, and, after the first episode, it works. Nov 25, 2019 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) Star Trek doesn't leave any gaps. Nor, I expect, will it. We will see the aliens, see the distant worlds. Nothing will be figurative, nothing will be implied, there will be no endless, unseen mystery about which to thrill. Dec 29, 2017 Full Review Alison Herman The Ringer Going into the second half of its season, Discovery has kinks to work out, but it's laid the all-important groundwork for a rich and tight-knit ensemble. Nov 14, 2017 Full Review Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex Far more emotional than other Trek shows, this is for those who wish to feel the big earnest emotion of a sci-fi epic while still peppering in enough moral quandaries to keep us engaged. Rated: 7/10 Feb 17, 2024 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Following the first two episodes, Star Trek: Discovery gets off and running with a series that truly feels cinematic. Rated: 4/5 Apr 24, 2022 Full Review Tony Black Cultural Conversation Star Trek: Discovery enjoys a fascinating first season, both in the context of its place in the television landscape and the historic Trek franchise as a whole. Godzilla T This really has nothing to do with Star Trek anymore. These new series are abominations, distortions of Gene Roddenberry's ideas and ideals. Why? Well, young people probably won't understand it when they read it because they grew up and will grow up in an almost disgusting, yet equally fascinating time. The formative series of the 60s, 80s and 90s were created at a time when people longed for peace, unity and humanity. The 60s were characterised by Sturm und Drang, the renaissance of modern times, whereas the 80s heralded the end of the Cold War. So what do the new stories want to convey if not the desire for global harmony? I believe that most people will quickly find the answer to this question if they take a moment to reflect. We are looking for madness and destruction, for insanity, chaos and downfall. And this is exactly what these new stories and narratives reflect. We can hardly be angry with the young creators and young consumers. They are children of this time. It would be all the more important if they didn't always just feed off the old, changing and distorting it... but create something new, come up with their own ideas and orientate themselves on the old if they want to continue to spin the legends. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review Hunter M I'm here because the disparity between critic and audience ratings of this show is BANANAS. I've watched it up until the middle of Season 4 and I highly recommend the first three seasons... To understand where I'm coming from, I'll provide some opinions on other shows, and you can decide if we have enough in common to pay attention to this review. Great to Good Sci-Fi TV: Cowboy Bebop... Firefly... Andor Good to Decent Sci-Fi TV: Battlestar Galactica... The Mandalorian... Stranger Things I think that for this show, the first and second seasons, and possibly the third, fall under Great to Good. For me, the fourth season has been a huge disappointment but a small price to pay for the previous 30-something hours of story. I've wondered about the disparity mentioned above, though. I imagine it's a combination of at least: 1. The drop in quality during seasons 4 and (I would guess) 5. 2. The inevitable tsunami of hurt feelings that come from massive fanbases when the source material is used as inspiration for a story instead of a manual for what to create. Look at certain Marvel movies... 3. The well-intentioned and noble pursuit of diversity and inclusion becoming so heavy-handed and ubiquitous... In my opinion, there's a point where the writers are clearly only being paid by how much they can beat these dead horses. The first three seasons championed this pursuit with good taste. After that it felt like it became an unhealthy obsession. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Markus L Badly written, unlikeable characters, a plot too thin for a whole season, dialogues are incredibly bad. The first ST series where I wanted the warp core to explode Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Jimmy J Its basically a depressing soap opera, really bad writing, the visuals are pretty good, the main actor cries way too much Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Melinda S My favorite after the original. In my opinion, it is the closest to the original in spirit. Captain Burnham, as played by Sonequa Martin-Greene, is as kickass as the original Kirk. All the characters have depth. They are all very sympathetic and well-defined. I especially love the relationship between Saru and Burnham. Tilly, Stamets, and Culber are so warm and the kind of people you would want for friends. My special favorite is Jeff Reno played by Tig Notaro. I always loved her appearances on the show. I just loved this show and was so sorry to get to the end of Season 5. I can't recommend it enough. It is warm, well-written, and exciting. There are a few clunker episodes, but the overall arc of the show is incredibly interesting and entertaining. I hope others enjoy it as much as I did.
