Critics Consensus

While it may hold few surprises for fans of the source material, The Sandman's first season satisfyingly adapts an allegedly unfilmable classic.

Tom Long Detroit News The Sandman dreams of being more than it is, but it’s still pretty good. Rated: B Dec 20, 2022 Full Review Andrew Male Times (UK) ... This ten-part series is at its best when it veers away from its lead (and often shoddy CGI) and focuses on other characters and story arcs, particularly those involving David Thewlis... Aug 26, 2022 Full Review Marc Burrows New Statesman The spirit is the same: an elegant representation that serves and enhances the storytelling. Aug 12, 2022 Full Review Alex Valencia Q+ Magazine Netflix’s The Sandman is a faithful adaptation of a beloved story that’s off to a very strong start. It's exactly the kind of high-concept queer dark fantasy that you didn’t know you needed but will be very grateful it exists. Jul 10, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net It is a marvel that it ever happened, and a miracle that it’s good. That it’s as touching, rewarding, and intensely personal feels outright impossible. But, somehow, the dream is real. Rated: 5/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Jeff Beck The Blu Spot The first season of The Sandman is a stunning adaptation of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed graphic novel series that faithfully brings to life its multitude of eccentric characters & the first few captivating storylines. Bill G Yes…more please! Season 2!? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review David D This is a superb vehicle to compare and contrast what can be made with very different sums of money. Also. Watch this. It's epic. Sandman, a multi-dimensional, level, magicorial journey. Can't say more about the sheer world class quality of the source material. Lord of the Rings fans would approach this similarly from a source material perspective. To TV. We have Sandman Season 1 and say, Rings of Power Season 1. Sandman is both the story of Dream and stories from Dream's world. It tells wonderful stories, beautifully, scripted, delivered and shot. Rings of Power is a dystopian stir-fry of storylines, poorly conceived, woefully acted and on occasion or in part produced. The budget of the first is normal for our times, the budget for the second astronomical, a narcissistic Tower of Babel where the only winners will be those suckling hard on the teat of this career ending production. Finally, it would explain where all the money was spent...because it wasn't spent on what's on the screen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Lystra P The Sandman is such a great adaptation of the graphic novels. Enjoyed every episode and the casting was really good. I was a bit sad not to get a goth girl Death, as she had such an iconic look but Kirby Howell-Baptiste won me over instantly! She owned the role and the Sound of Her Wings might have been the best episode. Looking forward to season 2! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review margaret W I always had a Feeling about the writer/creator of 'The Sandman', and after reading the latest graphic novel, watching the show - and then hearing the New Zealand News recently: those feeling(s) were (very unfortunately) realized & legitimized. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/04/24 Full Review Daniel M Started out strong, but then each episode after kept getting weaker and weaker. I might be biased from loving the comic too much that my expectations are too high, but the show just couldn’t quite reach that level even at the best of times Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review B A Nov 27, 2023 It started out strong. A captivating story of the king of dreams reclaiming his realm and artifacts of power. But all too quickly, Morpheus found all his artifacts of power and then around episode 6 a new story of the "vortex" takes over. And then the series just falls apart. Sturridge (Morpheus) and Hollbrook (Corinthian) become the only interesting actors amidst a sea of cliche characters and high school drama club acting. "Its up to you Rose! You're in charge now!" Seriously, that's a quotation (ep10). All that was missing was a line about "the Force". Update. There was one other notable character. The Ravin. Wait, what happened to him? Make the Ravin Morpheus' aide-de-camp. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
