What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Dead City creaks under the constraints of being an umpteenth spinoff, it ultimately shakes off the franchise's rigor mortis thanks to a change of scenery and a focus on two fan favorites.

Adrián Álvarez Espinof The Walking Dead: Dead City is still proof this franchise can keep on eternally like a Zombie with the desire to keep on walking, but without a soul... [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Nov 2, 2023 Full Review Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) This spin-off breathes a welcome sense of peril back into the universe. But with so many more spin-offs to come, the real trick will be if the producers can avoid choking the franchise to death. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 22, 2023 Full Review Brian Lowry CNN.com Dead City arguably delivers the most satisfying spinoff yet by combining the signature characters, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan. Throwing the pair into a zombie-ravaged Big Apple merely adds to the (OK, kind of depressing) fun. Jun 20, 2023 Full Review Amy Tonta That Shelf The reach to the climax and eventual resolution isn’t satisfying, the action is barely exciting, and the characters are not fleshed out enough for audiences to care. The show fails to put a new spin on The Walking Dead franchise .... Jul 28, 2023 Full Review Erin Maxwell LA Weekly/Village Voice If you’re a fan of the franchise who stuck with the show over the years through thick and thin — then a trip to New York might be a fun jaunt. Just don’t expect Dead City to breathe any new life into the undead. Jul 8, 2023 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Those more familiar with the original series may find this installment a bit tedious too, but The Walking Dead: Dead City is worth the time to explore the post-apocalyptic dead-filled world's most interesting survivors. Miss L They should have left Maggie and Negans storyline alone, just unnecessary and forced Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Todd T First, there are some highlight scenes, but they are few and far between. As for the issues, the budget was either too low or not used wisely. From special effects of New York to the abysmally low lighting used in almost half the series to hide low production costs. I had to greatly ramp up the brightness to even make out many scenes in the show. And finally there's the writing/acting. Largely emotionless, notes were missed, opportunities perhaps lost. Walking Dead spinoffs can be great, too, (See Daryl Dixon) it's just a shame this one wasn't. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/23/24 Full Review Big R Yessssss please keep it going beat series ever made!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Affleberry F I have to say, this just might be my favorite of the new trio of spin-offs to come out. To be totally fair, The Ones Who Live has not finished yet at the time of typing this, so they could still take the top spot. Regardless, if I'm being totally honest, I think I expected to like this one the least pre any of them being released that is. That said, it totally surprised me. It also didn't help that I found Daryl Dixon to be incredibly boring & too slowly paced. I also have to give Dead City credit for having one of the better...let's call it a "Super Zombie"...of the entire series. There have been many attempts at "suping up" the zombies throughout the years, some hits & many misses, but in Dead City they definitely hit the mark...you'll know it when you see it. Anywho, to wrap it up, if you're a fan of TWD in general, I believe you'll undoubtedly enjoy Dead City. Highly recommended.
