With 3nm Exynos 2500, Samsung aims to match Snapdragon in power efficiency

After the disappointing Exynos 2200 chip, Samsung's smartphone division decided to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip exclusively for the Galaxy S23. With the Galaxy S24, the Exynos chip came back and turned out to be a decent chip. With the next flagship Exynos chip, designed for the Galaxy S25, Samsung aims to match the efficiency of the Snapdragon chips.

3nm Exynos 2500 chip reportedly confirmed for Galaxy S25

A new report from the South Korean publication Business Korea claims Samsung will equip the Galaxy S25 with the Exynos 2500 processor. This new chipset will be fabricated on Samsung Foundry's second-generation 3nm process node (SF3). Recently, Samsung announced that it worked with Synopsis, a global Electronic Design Automation (EDA) company, to improve the power efficiency of its 3nm chip.

The Exynos 2500 won't be Samsung's first 3nm chip, though, as the Exynos W1000 chip for the Galaxy Watch 7 will be the company's first 3nm chip in July 2024.

Samsung Foundry is the first company to start mass-producing 3nm chips using a new transistor structure called Gate All Around (GAA). This new structure reduces power leakage and increases drive current, improving power efficiency and less heat. In comparison, other 3nm chips, such as the M4 chip in Apple's new iPad Pro, are made using TSMC's 3nm process, which uses the older FinFET structure.

Watch our comparison of the Galaxy S24+, equipped with the Exynos 2400 chip, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra, featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy chip, in the video below.

After proving the Exynos 2400 is a decently powerful and efficient chip and that it is a huge improvement over previous-generation Exynos chips, Samsung's confidence in Exynos chips has improved. Hence, the company decided to go ahead with the Exynos 2500 processor for some Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+ units. The Galaxy S25 Ultra will likely continue using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor.

What to expect from Galaxy S25?

The Galaxy S25 is expected to have a brand-new design, improved camera quality, and longer battery life. The phone could also feature two-way satellite connectivity for emergency communications. It will likely run Android 15-based One UI 7.1 out of the box and get major Android OS updates for seven years.

More Galaxy S25 features will likely be leaked closer to the launch, which is expected to happen in January 2025.
