Galaxy Z Flip 6 is first Samsung flip phone to support Expert RAW

Samsung's cute Galaxy Z Flip series phones are becoming more like the company's high-end slab phones. Now that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a 2,600 nits screen and a 4,000mAh battery, it is very close to the vanilla Galaxy S24 in terms of feature set. Although it lacks a dedicated telephoto camera, it gains one new feature. Samsung has introduced Galaxy Z Flip 6 Expert RAW compatibility.

Galaxy Z Flip 6 AstroPortrait feature can be accessed from Expert RAW

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the company's first phone in the series to support the Expert RAW feature. The information was revealed by Samsung in its community forum a day after the recent Galaxy Unpacked launch event. If you have pre-ordered the Galaxy Z Flip 6, you can install the Expert RAW app as soon as it arrives via the Galaxy Store.

Samsung has also revealed that the new flip phone supports AstroPortrait feature. This feature lets you capture portrait photos of people in the dark and use the night sky as the background. Since this mode captures a long exposure shot of the night sky, all the stars and cosmic bodies are more easily visible.

The South Korean firm has also revealed that RAW DNG files captured using the Expert RAW app can be edited natively in the Photo Editor section of the stock Gallery app. Samsung also claims to have improved the image quality of shots captured using the app with the help of AI.

Other new camera features

Besides the AstroPortrait and Expert RAW features, Samsung has introduced some clever new camera features with the Galaxy Z Flip 6. It includes Auto Zoom and Flex Camcorder modes. Auto Zoom automatically uses the optimal zoom length (0.6x, 1x, or 2x) based on the subject and the surroundings when the phone is in Flex Mode.

The Flex Camcorder is just a fun mode that lets you hold the flip phone as an old-school camcorder when the phone is half-folded. The camera preview appears on one half of the screen and the camera controls on the other half. You can easily control zoom and other aspects using your thumb.
