Samsung is gearing up to release new wearable devices this summer, and AI (artificial intelligence) might play a crucial role in shaping the experience for future Galaxy wearable device users.

Dr. Hon Pak, SVP and Head of Digital Health Team at Samsung's MX Business, recently sat down with Samsung Health Advisory members and discussed the future of AI, wearable devices, and how these components could improve healthcare.

During a meeting at the Samsung Medical Center in Seoul in early spring, several Samsung Health Advisory Board members shared their views on two main topics:

  • What role does technology play in health, especially when combined with Generative AI?
  • What role could Samsung play in the evolving health landscape?

Where AI, wearable technology, and health meet

  • Professor Myung Jin Chung, Director of Samsung AI Research Center at Samsung Medical Center, explained that lifelog data gathered from wearable devices can be helpful for healthcare and better understanding a patient's health history. He believes that the future of AI is to extract these insights from the wearer's daily life and deliver a deeper understanding of their health.
  • Cardiologist Dr. Michael Blum shared that continuous monitoring can become an important tool in the early detection and prediction of potential diseases. High blood pressure and atrial fibrillation “are high risk and high impact” issues that can be managed through low-intensity interventions. Dr. Blum says that smartwatches can help doctors better understand underlying issues that may be contributing to such diseases. And AI could “turn data into consumable insights and actionable wisdom.”
  • Dr. David Klonoff, M.D., President of the Diabetes Research Institute at Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, said that glucose monitoring has become more prevalent for diabetes management and for people who don't have diabetes but want to pursue a healthier lifestyle. Glucose monitoring can be a powerful tool when combined with other health metrics, including sleep data, blood pressure, and activity insights. Wearables and AI can offer “a more nuanced understanding of metabolic health and facilitate opportunities to improve overall wellness and fitness.”

How can Samsung improve health through wearables and AI?

As far as Samsung's contribution to the health landscape is concerned, both doctors and the professor seemingly share the same vision that Samsung technologies, including wearable devices and AI, can contribute to encouraging behavioral change. They can help users better understand the benefits of changing certain habits or lifestyle choices and how improvements can happen from gradual changes in one's behavior.

In addition, Professor Chung explained that, even though behavioral changes can be difficult, they can happen more easily with support from family members. With that in mind, Professor Chung says Samsung could contribute to the health landscape by developing tools to allow wearable users to create care circles with family and friends.

Editor's Note: We can never be too sure of what the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 series and Galaxy Ring will offer, but these interviews suggest that Samsung could introduce more clever AI features to its wearables and the Health platform later this year.

In addition, Samsung might also be working on implementing wearable technologies capable of reading the user's glucose levels. Recent reports have said that Samsung is trying to develop noninvasive blood sugar monitoring solutions before Apple.
