Ever since the AI boom started a few years ago, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips have been in high demand. Despite being the world's biggest memory chip maker, Samsung faced difficulties getting HBM chips certified by Nvidia. the world's biggest AI chip firm. However, Samsung could soon get Nvidia's certification for its HBM3E chips.
Samsung's HBM3E chips could get Nvidia certification in November 2024
A few days ago, it was reported that Samsung's HBM3 chips received certification for Nvidia's AI chips, which are meant for the Chinese market. Now, a new report from Bloomberg claims that Samsung expects its HBM3E chips to receive Nvidia's certification by November 2024.
According to the report, Samsung is closing the gap with SK Hynix, the world's biggest HBM3 memory chip supplier. So, the company might not face as much delay in getting Nvidia's certification for HBM3E chips as it did with HBM3 chips. SK Hynix was the first to get Nvidia's certification in Q1 of 2024.
It was reported that Samsung's HBM chips faced difficulties in certification due to higher heat generation and efficiency. However, the South Korean firm rubbished those rumors.
Samsung has been supplying HBM chips to other AI chip firms, such as AMD. After facing challenges, Samsung replaced the head of its memory chip division in May 2024.
Reports indicate the company is already working on HBM4 chips (Snowbolt), and their samples could be sent to clients in 2025. If the reports are to be believed, Samsung could start the mass production of HBM4 chips in 2026 using its 4nm fabrication process, while SK Hynix could use TSMC's 5nm process.
