Samsung may be working on a DeX-ChromeOS hybrid notebook powered by Exynos

Samsung may be developing a new device for its DeX platform. What is it? By the sound of it, it's anybody's guess. But rumors say it's called DeXbook. And if that name sounds familiar, it's because it has now re-emerged after more than three years of silence.

At the beginning of 2020, DeXbook was rumored to be a new DeX-oriented device in development. Supposedly, DeXbook was a 14.1-inch portable monitor that could help Galaxy smartphone users turn their phones into DeX workstations on the go. Nothing came of it, but now the DeXbook moniker has reemerged in an odd rumor.

A DeX Chromebook powered by an Exynos SoC

According to new information (via @OreXda), DeXbook might be a Samsung notebook that combines the DeX platform and ChromeOS into one device. How, exactly, is unclear.

The rumor also states that the Samsung DeXbook could be powered by an Exynos chipset built on a 5nm or 7nm node. And again, it's unclear whether this Exynos chip is new or existing — such as the Exynos 2100 or Exynos 9825.

Lastly, Samsung could announce this unusual DeX-Chrome OS hybrid device alongside a new Exynos-powered Galaxy Book for Windows on Arm. Rumors about the latter device emerged earlier this week, but coincidentally, that information is also rooted in years-old reports and is now re-emerging.

Judging by these recent claims, it sounds as if Samsung had a few projects temporarily shelved two-to-three years ago, and the company is now considering bringing them back in one form or another. At the same time, these rumors suggest that Samsung has big plans for Exynos chips to be employed by a wider category of devices. Samsung could plan something big for its in-house chipset division.

Then again, these rumors could be unfounded, so it's better to take them with a pinch of salt until more concrete evidence emerges and not bet on the DeXbook becoming a reality. At least, not yet.
