Elon Musk Donates $10m To Protect Humanity From AI Threat
Elon Musk has set aside a $10 million cash pot to protect us from eventual extinction at the mechanical hands of robotic gentry.
The pioneer of electric cars, Musk has frequently voiced concern that our preoccupation with artificial intelligence (AI) is going to drive humanity to a sticky end.
The donation marks a step towards concrete action to assuage these fears, and will go to the Future of Life Institute (FLI).
The organisation is a non-profit advisory board dedicated to weighing up the potential of AI technology to benefit humanity.
The battle against Skynet
Despite being the architect of futuristic enterprises like Hyperloop – a high-speed transportation system – as well as SpaceX and Tesla Motors, Musk believes AI poses a real threat to humans if unchecked.”
He has previously tweeted that artificial intelligence could evolve to be “potentially more dangerous than nukes”
Consequently, his $10 million donation will help bolster the FLI’s global research program that provides grants to those who are developing ideas to make AI safer.
The program opens for applications from the 19 January, with more details on the Future of Life Institute website.
