ABSTRACT
Developing a global food system to deliver healthy diets for a growing population, while reducing the environmental impact and climate change, is one of the greatest global challenges of our time. There are co-benefits of measures that reduce climate-altering emissions and, at the same time, improve health by shifting away from the overconsumption of meat from ruminant sources in high meat-consuming societies. A general transition to more plant-based diets could lead to lower greenhouse gas emissions and likely reductions in diet-related non-communicable diseases. Transformative approaches to promote shifts to more plant-based diets may involve providing economic incentives for the production and consumption of more fruits, vegetables and pulses, inclusion of sustainability criteria in food-based dietary guidelines, taxing excessive meat consumption, public education campaigns and educational programmes in schools, labelling, and promoting collaboration among sectors.
