The big names and manufacturers have kicked things off early, so we've searched through all of the current sales and hand-picked the best deals on our recommended mattresses. 2. Nectar Memory Foam Mattress: was from $699 now $499 at Nectar
Nectar remains our top choice if you're after a comfortable and affordable mattress that's great value for money. And that choice is made even easier now you can save up to 40% on the manufacturer's most popular memory foam mattress. We've seen a better discount on the twin before, but the queen is down to $649 – that's the same deal we saw during the last major sales event in July. We awarded this mattress four stars in our Nectar Mattress review, praising the impressive quality for the price, excellent pressure relief and solid temperature regulation. With free shipping, returns and a full-year trial you can give it a go with very little risk, too.

3. Purple Mattress: was from $999 now $799 at Purple
Hot sleepers: here's one for you. The Purple Mattress is our top-rated cooling mattress and it's now $200 off in the Labor Day sales. The fantastic GelFlex Grid is why it's so good at keeping you cool throughout the night as it allows air to flow freely around you while you sleep. Now onto the mattress that's our top pick for side sleepers, which is now 25% off in the Labor Day sales and back to the same low price we saw earlier in the year. You get thick layers that offer superior cradling while contouring foam more evenly distributes pressure to give you great overall support. This limited-time offer also includes two free pillows, alongside the manufacturer's usual 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty for added peace of mind.

5. DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress: was from $839 now $419 at DreamCloud
There's a huge saving of up to 50% off mattresses in the Labor Day sale at DreamCloud. Thankfully, this discount applies to the manufacturer's best hybrid mattress – the aptly named DreamCloud Hybrid – and you can now get a queen size for $665. We fully recommend this one as it offers a superior blend of comfort and support. It's also significantly cheaper than the equivalent mattress from Saatva so it's a sensible buy if you need a more budget-friendly and affordable mattress and don't want to compromise on quality.

6. Tempur-Adapt: was from $1,699 now $1,499 at Tempur-Pedic
Back sleepers looking for a mattress upgrade in the Labor Day sales should check out this Tempur-Adapt from Tempur-Pedic that's now up to $400 off. Our Tempur-Adapt mattress review praised the outstanding pressure relief, balanced support and impressive motion isolation. It may be one for hot sleepers to pass on, though, as we found it trapped a lot of heat in our testing. However, if the rest sounds good it's a great time to buy as these mattresses aren't always discounted. 7. Casper Snow: was from $1,875 now $1,310 at Casper
There's 30% off all mattresses at Casper for the manufacturer's Labor Day sale, but we've picked out the Casper Snow from all the options as it's a stellar cooling mattress. It's packed with clever tech including a cooling Snow cover, HeatDelete bands and Phase Change Material that work together to smartly disperse heat throughout the night. Several different support zones and a hybrid design ensure the levels of comfort and control you'd expect from a memory foam mattress, too.

8. Avocado Green Mattress: was from $1,399 now $1,189 at Avocado
The Avocado Green is the manufacturer's hero product and its most popular mattress – and there's a 15% discount across all sizes for Labor Day. It's made using an assortment of organically certified materials helping you to make a more eco-friendly purchase. As we found in our Avocado Green Mattress review, there's an impressive mattress beneath those noble sustainability initiatives, too. It's another one we recommend to back sleepers and heavy sleepers who might prefer a firmer option.

9. Bear Original Mattress: was from $699 now $455 at Bear Mattress
The Bear Labor Day sale features up to 35% off mattresses, plus the option to add a free accessories bundle containing pillows, sheets and mattress protectors to your order worth up to $500. Of all the options, we'd go for the Bear Original as it's another excellent cooling mattress available at a great price – especially with those freebies included. It sports a breathable quilted cover and three layers of memory foam to offer solid cooling, support and comfort.

7. Cocoon by Sealy Chill Memory Foam Mattress: was from $619 now $399 at Cocoon by Sealy
We'd recommend this Cocoon by Sealy Chill for anyone looking for a cooling mattress at a more affordable price than the Casper Snow – especially now it starts at $399 in the manufacturer's Memorial Day sale. In fact, it's the top budget pick in our best cooling mattress guide and we awarded it four stars out of five in our Cocoon by Sealy Chill review. The firmness suits multiple sleeping positions, and you can go with the surprisingly breathable memory foam or the hybrid design for even better cooling performance. When do Labor Day mattress sales start in 2024?

Labor Day 2024 falls on September 2, but this year's mattress sales are already well underway. While you might see some marketed as early Labor Day mattress sales or pre-Labor Day offers, the vast majority will remain exactly the same from now until the holiday itself.

Some manufacturers or brands have saved a higher discount or some neat extras for the day itself, but this isn't as common nowadays. Have confidence that the offers you see now are the best they're going to get in this year's sales. If you do want to wait, the next best chance you'll have to save will be the Black Friday mattress deals around November.

Is Labor Day a good time to buy a mattress?

Major holidays are typically a very good time to buy a mattress and Labor Day is no exception. It's one of the last big shopping events before Black Friday and is known for featuring steep markdowns and generous freebie offers. We often find some of the year's best deals during Labor Day mattress sales.

However, keep in mind that the increased cost of living and inflationary pressures are still affecting some areas. There will be deals and discounts, but the actual price of mattresses has – in many cases – risen over the last year or so, meaning many previous record-low prices are now unattainable.

Labor Day mattress sales: price history

In last year's Labor Day mattress sales, there were hundreds of deals to choose between, with big offers from popular sleep brands including Nectar, Purple and Tempur-Pedic competing with discounts from heavyweight retailers including Mattress Firm, Macy's and Bed, Bath and Beyond. We searched through them all and rounded up the very best Labor Day mattress sales to help you bag the biggest bargain.

The best Labor Day mattress sale came from Nectar. You could get 33% off all mattresses, which dropped the price of these already more affordable options and made them even more affordable. As all Nectar mattresses come with a year's risk-free trial and forever warranty, no other Labor Day mattress deal came close to this for value for money.

Those with a larger budget or after a more premium option would have done well to shop at Saatva instead. The brand's luxury hybrid mattress was our editor's choice and you could get savings of up to $400 when you spent $1,000 or more. Considering the cheapest size was just over this threshold, you saved a good chunk of money no matter what you bought. As we explain in our Saatva Classic mattress review, that hybrid is exceptional value for a handcrafted luxury bed – especially with a discount.

In short, there were plenty of Labor Day mattress deals to browse, whether you were looking for the cushioning support of memory foam, the bounce of springs, a cooling hybrid option, or an ultra-durable and sustainable choice like organic latex.

5 tips for buying a mattress in the Labor Day sales

Buying a mattress online is easier than you think if you've never done it before - and it's likely cheaper too. Increased competition online has led to lower prices for consumers. Plus, many brands have been able to save money by choosing not to have physical stores and have instead invested in better quality materials, so you often get more for your cash when you buy online too.

To help you find exactly the right mattress, all the top brands now offer long, risk-free sleep trials so you can test them properly (and safely) by sleeping on them in your own home.

Most of them come with free deliveries and returns, too - all of which makes buying online an easier, quicker and more reliable way of ending up with the right mattress than spending five minutes testing one in a showroom.

Here are five things to look for when buying a mattress online:

1. Choose a mattress with at least a 60-night trial
The only way to know whether a mattress is right is to sleep on it. That's why most top brands now offer a risk-free trial and promise to collect the mattress and give you a full refund if you don't like it (as long as it isn't damaged).

We've made sure all the mattresses in our Labor Day mattress sale round-up come with at least a 60-night trial - the majority come with 100 nights, and some, such as Nectar, give you an entire year to decide whether you like it.

2. Check for free returns
As part of the risk-free trial, most brands offer a full refund and free returns if you decide the mattress isn't right for you. However, some do charge a fee for collection, around $75, so check the policy first.

3. Read third-party T&Cs
We usually recommend buying your mattress directly from the manufacturer so that you can make the most of the generous sleep trial and warranties. You're more likely to get a better deal from the manufacturer too, with competitive discounts and free gifts often added to your order.

However, sometimes a third-party retailer can run a deal that makes it slightly cheaper than buying through the manufacturer. If you're looking for the cheapest price possible, this can be a good way to get it. However, bear in mind that you may not receive the same trial or warranty benefits if you buy from a retailer such as Amazon, so always read the T&Cs carefully first.

4. Ensure it's the right size with the elbow test
Do the elbow test to work out what size mattress you need. Lie back with your hands behind your head. If you share a bed, your elbows should be able to extend without touching your side of the bed or your partner's elbow; if you don't share a bed, your elbows should be able to extend without touching either side of the bed.

5. Try a new mattress for three weeks
It can take up to 21 days for your body to adjust to a new mattress. So even if it isn't comfortable initially and you wake up with aches and pains, stick with it – particularly if your body is used to sleeping on a much older mattress. If after three weeks you still don't like it, then you know it's because it isn't right, rather than because your body still hasn't readjusted from sleeping on a less supportive or different mattress.
