Is it jumper weather where you are? It definitely is here. It’s gotten COLD all of a sudden I think.
I’ve been dipping into Keep Moving, which is a series of motivational notes and reflections from poet Maggie Smith. Written in the wake of her divorce, it’s a wonderfully poignant, affirmative and motivational collection centred on a theme of moving past trauma and remembering to live again

‘I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers!’ 🍂
Trying to focus on the small, simple pleasures. Mine are: a vintage book, a crisp autumn day, a snuggle with a cat.
What simple things are you trying to take pleasure in?

I'm sort of annoyed at myself for leaving this sitting on my TBR shelves for years, when I've loved all the Michael Chabon books I've read so far and I knew it would be excellent. It is. @michael.chabon is such an outstanding writer and this tale about a jewish detective investigating a crime in the midst of a deeply religious and very closed jewish community in Alaska at a critical time in the region, when the area is reverting back to Alaskan control after having been a haven for exiled jews post WWII, is completely gripping. This is part gumshoe story, part love story, and also a tale about people in exile and the ways they survive, as well as an examination of the mixing of very different races. As always with Chabon, I had to look up lots of new words and I love that. Loved it all

If like me you’re pretty exhausted by it all, I hope you find some escapism in a bloody good book this weekend. I’m currently enjoying #BoyParts by Eliza Clark - compelling and compulsive so far!⁣

I am loving seeing a resurgence of Rebecca on my Instagram feed. I know there is always a great deal of love for this du Maurier and the @netflixuk upcoming adaption is doing nothing to dampen that. Do you have a favourite du Maurier?

Nigella AND Dolly Alderton recommended this book, so it was inevitable I’d love it.
The book Taffy Brodesser-Akner has created is so clever and so intriguing that I'd call it genius. Absolutely a brilliantly crafted piece of fiction. I'm astonished by its blistering humour and insanely insightful look at modern life. It is both a sharp and incredibly tender look at relationships, and individuals with all their frayed edges, and how we navigate the lives we have unwittingly built for ourselves.
And ooft, what an ending.

Have you read any of Ali Smith’s quartet yet? Her first 3 were fantastic pieces of work, will this last one be as beautiful?

I was motivated to read Candide because of the amazing series #thegreat in which Voltaire makes a cameo. When I read more about Candide, I simply knew that I had to read it. This satire attacks the most heralded optimistic drive of this past decade and highlights the illusion of free will. The notion that “everything is for the best” doesn’t always holds truth and nothing more can augment this argument than #2020
Enjoy!

Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong
•
There were so many moments in this book where I had to pause and reflect on what I'd just read; such powerful lyricism!
•
Nevertheless, Hong's critiques and observations are pointed and unapologetic. Her writing is assured, unflinching, and honest.
•
Minor Feelings packs a major punch (ba-dum tssh!) - I can't recommend it enough 🤗

I was blasting Billy Joel (Piano Man, New York State of Mind ...) in my study while cleaning it when I realised that on the daybed was a stack of books by authors that I would highly recommend. Looking for something to read? Here is non-fiction by Elizabeth Hardwick, Virginia Woolf, Joan Didion, Edward W. Said, Annie Ernaux, and Alejandro Zambra. Except for 'Orientalism' by Said (very academic), these are books I could read again and again. #reading #bookstack #nonfiction #authors #booksofinstagram

✨Women in Translation Month✨
.
Are you taking part? Less than a third of literary translations published in the UK are by women, and these win fewer prizes than translated works by men. In August, there is a focus on celebrating the women who do get translated, and also promoting the translators and publishers behind them.

Five stars. It grabbed me by the balls and dragged me through parts of my past and made me laugh, nod, cry and sigh out loud. Fen by Daisy Johnson is strange, beguiling, puzzling and delightfully off kilter. Some of the stories are admittedly not as strong as others, but as a rule this is an intriguing collection which focuses on female sexuality and nature. Highly recommend.

The British Library Women Writers collection features female authors from various decades, who “enjoyed broad popular appeal in their day.” These three editions cover the 10s (Sinclair), 30s (Panter-Downes) and 40s (Young), with more to come in the future!
