After decades of owning and running it, the partners John Clark and Alistair Miller sold it at Christmas 2016 to their own workers. They chose that course despite having an offer on the table from an American multinational – because that would almost certainly have seen their business split up, their Scottish factory shut down and their staff on the dole. Sop with a lot of effort and with a bit of risk, John and Alistair chose the alternative: employee ownership, like John Lewis or Arup.
