The new solidarity
The uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt have provided inspiring images of a popular will for change, but in the US, Europe and other developed nations, the fallout of the 2008 financial crisis has created the conditions for a new conservative fiscal orthodoxy and a concerted push by the right for cuts in government spending and public services. Despite protests for union rights in Wisconsin and elsewhere, the future is in the balance. What are the prospects for any movement towards an alternative vision of greater economic equality and social justice?
