York St John University
St John's descends from two Victorian Anglican teacher training colleges. Over the years, it has gone through various -incarnations and won full university -status in 2006. Its course programme has diversified a bit, too, though you can, of course, still train to teach here. There are around 6,000 students and almost half of them are over 21. There's also a male-female ratio of 28:72. The campus is located almost literally a stone's throw from York Minster, the stunning medieval cathedral. All the other amenities of the charming and compact city centre are on your doorstep. Just remember to negotiate the crowds of camera-clicking tourists as you negotiate the lovely, traffic-free streets.
