  • AUG 2016; Suffolk; The Fairs family have farmed in Suffolk since 1967. In 2004 they became the first farm in the UK to grow, press and bottle their own cold pressed rapeseed oil.

The combine harvester, or simply combine, is a machine that harvests grain crops. The name derives from its combining three separate operations comprising harvestingÑreaping, threshing, and winnowingÑinto a single process. Among the crops harvested with a combine are wheat, oats, rye, barley, corn (maize), sorghum, soybeans, flax (linseed), sunflowers, and canola. The waste straw left behind on the field is the remaining dried stems and leaves of the crop with limited nutrients which is either chopped and spread on the field or baled for feed and bedding for livestock.

Combine harvesters are one of the most economically important labour saving inventions, significantly reducing the fraction of the population that must be engaged in agriculture

  • Senegal's beaches polluted<br>epa00158500 A Senegalese man wades in the Atlantic Ocean off a polluted beach in N'gor Senegal Monday 22 March 2004. Today is international World Water Day 2004 and focuses on the theme: Water and Disasters. According to Senegalese law it is illegal to dispose of waste and waste water in public places. However due to problems with local municipalities, who are responsible for waste disposal, inadequate facilities are available for the safe removal of waste. Thus many communities dispose of their waste themselves on any available open public ground or stream or beach. This has severe health implications as well as devastating marine environments. It is estimated by the World Health Organisation that most deaths and pathological complaints in developing countries are associated with a water-related carrier. EPA/NIC BOTHMA
