African fashion special

  • In this image, Stephen Okoth walks down a street in bright red trousers and floral shirt, while carrying a cathode ray TV on his shoulder. It is a bright sunny day in Nairobi. In the Kibera neighbourhood of Nairobi, Stephen Okoth, also known as Ondivour, is a film-maker, photographer and model for his self-styled colourful and vintage fashion. “He inspires a generation in the shanty town through his sense of style, which brings so much hope and vibrancy to the people,” says photographer Brian Orieno, who submitted this image to the #CelebrateAfrica competition hosted by fairtrade photo agency Picfair and New African magazine, and sponsored by Canon. The competition was open to residents of all African countries and the winners will be announced on 3 May.
