Anna Bateson

Anna Bateson

Anna Bateson is the chief executive of Guardian Media Group (GMG), a role she took up in September 2022.

Anna worked at the Guardian from 2016 onward, first as VP for platforms and partnerships and then from 2017-2020 as chief customer officer, and briefly as interim chief executive.

Prior to the Guardian, Anna worked at a number of tech and media organisations, including YouTube, Google, ITV, MTV and Bloomberg, and was most recently CEO at a VC-backed e-commerce beauty business.

Katharine Viner

Editor-in-chief, Guardian News & Media

Katharine Viner

Katharine Viner is editor-in-chief of the Guardian, a position she has held since June 2015. She was deputy editor 2008-2015, launched the award-winning Guardian Australia in 2013, and was also editor of Guardian US, based in New York. Since becoming editor-in-chief, she has put the Guardian’s purpose at the heart of its journalism, led the development of the Guardian’s successful reader contribution strategy and brought the organisation back to a profitable position. Under her leadership the Guardian became the first news organisation in the world to win both an Oscar and a Bafta.

Katharine gave the 2013 AN Smith lecture in journalism at the University of Melbourne, The Rise of the Reader, discussing journalism in the age of the open web, and a speech on Truth and Reality in a Hyper-Connected World as part of the Oxford University Women of Achievement Lecture Series in May 2016. She is the winner of the Diario Madrid prize for journalism for her 2016 long read, How Technology Disrupted the Truth. She is based in London.

Keith Underwood

Chief financial and operating officer, Guardian Media Group

Keith Underwood

Keith joined GMG in June 2020 as chief financial and operating officer and is responsible for financial stewardship, operational performance and helping to shape the strategic direction of the group. Keith is a member of the GMG board, and served as interim chief executive of GMG from June 2021-September 2022.

Keith has worked in the media industry for more than 20 years and has substantial experience in successfully leading a wide range of business functions. He spent more than eight years on the Executive Committee at Channel 4, most recently as its CFO/COO. Before joining Channel 4, Keith was employed by Discovery Networks International, Sky and PwC.

Keith is now a Board member of the Digital Catapult (the UK’s leading advanced digital technology innovation centre), having previously served as Chairman of Freeview and a Board director of Digital UK and YouView.

Pooja Bagga

Chief information officer

Pooja is an accomplished leader with over 25 years’ experience and is renowned for driving high-impact, complex transformations across business and technology. She is responsible for driving the Guardians’ corporate technology and data strategy.

Pooja joined the Guardian from Royal Mail Group where she successfully led a number of large-scale, multi-year transformation projects. This included moving away from legacy technology, streamlining operations during Covid-19 by digitising manual processes and leading Royal Mail’s recovery from a cyber-attack. She was also the executive sponsor of the diversity, equity and inclusion network.

Prior to joining Royal Mail Pooja led ERP transformation, merger and acquisition activities and cross company integrations at British Airways, Transport for London (TfL) and IAG.

Suzy Black

Group HR director, Guardian Media Group

Suzy Black

Suzy Black joined GMG in April 2014 and is responsible for the full range of HR functions, including employee relations, training and development, organisational change, pensions, reward, diversity and sustainability. Before joining GMG, Suzy was HR director at Lloyd’s of London, the world’s specialist insurance market, conducting business in more than 200 countries. Prior to that she held senior HR positions across a diverse range of businesses including ICI, Barclays and MSN UK. Suzy graduated in 1998 from University College London and subsequently gained a Masters from the London School of Economics in 2001. She is actively involved with LSE and has been a member of its board since 2004. Suzy is also a member of LSE’s remuneration committee.

Amber de Botton

Chief communications officer

Amber de Botton

A journalist for almost two decades, Amber was deputy head of politics at Sky News before moving to ITV News, where she was head of politics and then head of UK news. At ITV News, Amber led teams across the UK covering the death of Queen Elizabeth II, managed exclusives like Partygate, and oversaw investigations including care homes during Covid and social housing, which led to changes in the law.

Amber managed coverage for several UK elections and negotiated multiple TV debates – including the first ever televised head-to-head debate in the UK. Amber then served as Communications Director at 10 Downing Street from 2022-23, where she was in charge of the UK Government’s communications strategy.

Imogen Fox

Chief advertising officer

Imogen Fox leads the Guardian’s advertising strategy, overseeing key relationships with clients and agencies. Imogen has held a number of vital leadership roles in the commercial department since 2016, most recently as director of advertising, heading the commercial teams responsible for client relationships, marketing, strategy and content. Previously she was executive editor of Guardian Labs, leading their award-winning branded content partnerships.

Prior to this, Imogen worked for the Guardian in editorial, progressing from assistant fashion editor to head of fashion. In this role, Imogen drove the Guardian’s global reputation for intelligent fashion reporting, features and visuals.

Richard Furness

Chief strategy and business development officer, Guardian Media Group

Richard Furness

Richard Furness is GMG’s chief strategy and business development officer, shaping and executing the Guardian’s strategy as well as leading on developing and maintaining strategic relationships and partnerships.

Richard has been part of the Guardian since 1998, working in a number of vital roles, including as marketing director, director of publishing and most recently as managing director, customer engagement and business development.

Owen Gibson

Deputy editor, Guardian News & Media

Owen Gibson is deputy editor of Guardian News & Media, responsible for day-to-day digital output, the Monday to Friday paper, reader relationships including membership, investigations, production and sport. Prior to his appointment in January 2020, Owen was head of national news during a period that included the Brexit negotiations, the Windrush scandal and the 2019 general election.

Owen joined the Guardian in 2001 as new media editor for the then recently launched MediaGuardian website. Between 2004 and 2016 he was Guardian media correspondent, sports news correspondent and chief sports correspondent. In 2016, Owen became head of sport and during his tenure the Guardian won the SJA sports newspaper and website of the year awards for coverage including the football abuse scandal.

Caspar Llewellyn Smith is chief product officer of Guardian News & Media (GNM), responsible for all aspects of the Guardian’s digital products, including the development and evolution of the Guardian’s core products.

Formerly a journalist, Caspar joined GNM from the Daily Telegraph in 2003 to launch the Observer Music Monthly magazine. He was later head of culture for GNM before becoming the editor of theguardian.com and the Guardian’s other digital platforms and then director of digital strategy. He joined the executive committee in 2015.

Liz Wynn

Chief supporter officer, Guardian Media Group

Liz Wynn

Liz Wynn joined the Guardian in 2023 as chief supporter officer and is responsible for driving digital supporter revenues.

Liz has 20 years of commercial, marketing and operational experience in media and telecoms sectors, having led a broad range of marketing and commercial teams at Sky, EE and Orange, and launching a sequence of groundbreaking consumer propositions, including Sky Mobile and Sky Glass, and EE 4G. She is a trustee of the Royal Society for Public Health.
