Ten arrested for highway robbery

A special team of Coimbatore Rural Police arrested 10 persons on Wednesday in connection with the plotted highway robbery near Kaniyur toll plaza in which two youth were attacked by a gang and taken away a bag on Monday night.

The arrested have been identified as Prabhakaran, Sarathpandi, Manikandan, Babu, Saupar Sadiq, Kirubakaran, Vendimuthu, Sethurajan, Sripraveen and Pavul aka Manikandan, all natives of Tiruppur. Prabhakaran, claimed himself as financier, called the two persons to Tiruppur and handed over a bag stating that it had ₹30 lakh in cash and cheque leaves of ₹20 lakh. The duo wanted the money to expand their business.

Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Balamurugan, who led the investigation, said that Prabhakaran employed 11 persons to attack the duo and get the bag from them when they were returning from Tiruppur to Coimbatore on Monday night. In fact, the bag Prabhakaran handed over to the duo did not have money but two bundles of of A4 sheets. Prabhakaran had instructed the 11 persons to retrieve the bag without informing its content.

The gang as instructed by Prabhakaran took away the bag attacking the duo without knowing the content in the bag.

Additional Superintendent of Police G.S. Anitha, DSP Balamurugan, Inspector Shanmugam, sub-inspectors Arvind Kumar, Lenin Appadurai, Pandiarajan, and constable Mahendran Raja Raja Cholan arrested the 10 accused and booked two others in the case late on Wednesday.
