Kuala Lumpur-bound Malaysian Airlines makes emergency landing in Hyderabad due to engine failure

A Malaysian Airlines flight from Hyderabad to Kuala Lumpur made an emergency landing at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in the wee hours of Thursday, June 20, 2024, due to engine failure.

Flight MH 199 departed from RGIA at 12.30 a.m. and was scheduled to land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 7.10 a.m. However, shortly after takeoff, the Boeing 737-800 aircraft experienced atechnical problem in engine and returned to Hyderabad, landing at 3.21 a.m. The aircraft was carrying 131 passengers and seven crew.

Speaking to The Hindu, a representative from Malaysian Airlines confirmed that shortly after takeoff, the aircraft experienced engine failure. The pilot contacted Air Traffic Control (ATC) and decided to return to RGIA. “We are assisting the passengers at the airport. Accommodation has been provided at a hotel, although some passengers from Hyderabad chose to return home. We are working to arrange an alternative flight by this evening,” the representative stated.

In a statement, Malaysian Airlines said “The airline confirms that flight MH199 from Hyderabad to Kuala Lumpur on June 20 returned to Hyderabad due to an issue with one of the engines during climb after take off. The aircraft safely landed in RGIA at 3.21 local time. All the passengers and crew disembarked safely. Affected passengers will be reallocated to other flights for their continued journey. The aircraft is currently on ground for further inspection. Safety remains of utmost importance to Malaysian Airlines.”
