As many of those living on Old Mahabalipuram Road constitute a ‘floating population’ of bachelors, getting them to be involved in activities aimed at improving the area is often difficult.
Harsha Koda, coordinator of Federation of OMR Residents Associations (FOMRRA), says residents are working on changing this situation.
“We are working on organising car-free Sundays on OMR and we feel that, when this takes off, the initiative will draw youngsters. Once we have their attention, we can talk to them about bigger problems. We plan to initiate this (car free Sundays) in a 2-3 km stretch between Shollinganallur and Thoraipakkam.
“As of now, we are talking to all associations under FOMRRA in this connection,” says Harsha, a coordinator of FOMRRA.
“We have already started tree revival strategies at Sabari Terrace apartments in Sholinganallur. The cyclone-affected trees have been strengthened and pruned and we are waiting for summer to plant new trees. Now is the ideal time for all the residents to come together as a community and get our green cover back,” said Harsha.
“Piped water facilities and underground sewage will be main focus in 2017.”
