Arvind Swami-starrer Sathuranga Vettai 2 has got mired in a legal battle with the actor filing a civil suit in the Madras High Court for recovery of his balance remuneration of ₹ 1.79 crore from the film’s producer M. Manobala, an acclaimed director and comedian.
The actor sought a direction to the producer to pay him ₹1,79,80,438 with interest at the rate of 18% per annum from the date of the filing of the suit till the date of realisation.
He also filed an injunction application to restrain the release of the movie, starring actress Trisha, until the disposal of the suit.
The case came up for hearing before Justice M. Sundar on Tuesday and the plaintiff’s counsel said he was not pressing for an ex parte interim injunction against the release of the movie and that he would be satisfied if court notice as well as a private notice was issued to the producer returnable within a short time.
However, when the judge wanted to know when the movie was scheduled to be released, the counsel said the date was yet to be announced.
“If you are not pressing for an injunction, then why did you file an application,” the judge asked and said the producer could end up releasing it any time.
He cautioned the counsel that recording his submission on not pressing for an injunction could turn disadvantageous for the plaintiff in the subsequent proceedings of the civil suit because the actor may not be able to recover the remuneration, which he claims to be unpaid, if the movie was allowed to be released.
Immediately, the counsel told the court that he had not pressed for an ex parte injunction only to show the bonafide intention of his client.
He also urged the court not to record his submissions on the injunction issue.
Thereafter, the judge ordered notice to the producer returnable by September 20.
