Actor and Shiv Sena leader Govinda accidentally shot himself in the leg with his licensed revolver around 4:45 a.m., as he was leaving home to catch a morning flight.
The actor is in a much better condition after the bullet was removed from his left leg, his brother Kirti Kumar said. “While keeping his revolver in the locker it fell from his hand, however, he is also clueless about what exactly happened,” he added.
He is currently hospitalised at Mumbai’s CritiCare Hospital and is under observation. Police are probing the incident and have seized the gun.
The actor was about to leave from his Juhu residence when the revolver misfired, a police official said. The actor hasn’t lodged any complaint, he added.
“We had a 6 a.m. flight to catch for a show in Kolkata and I had reached the airport. Govinda ji was about to leave his residence for the airport when this accident happened,” the actor’s manager said.
“The revolver apparently fell down while being kept in the cupboard and misfire. It is due to god’s grace that Govinda ji sustained only leg injury and it was nothing serious,” he said.
In a statement released later in the day, the actor thanked his fans, adding that the doctors have removed bullet from leg.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had a telephone conversation with the actor enquired about his health and advised him to rest. He also asked about the treatment.
“I have personally reached out to Govinda to convey my deep concern about his health condition. On behalf of the government and people of our State, I wish him a swift and complete recovery. I have assured Govinda that he and his family will receive all necessary support during this challenging time. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones,” Mr. Shinde said.
Govinda has been an iconic figure in Indian cinema and has brought joy to millions through his performances. We stand united in hoping for his quick return to good health, the Chief Minister added.
Govinda is a leader of the Shiv Sena Eknath Shinde group. Former Minister and Sena leader Deepak Sawant visited Govinda at the hospital.
