Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that the law is equal for everyone and no one would be spared after a woman died when a two-wheeler being driven by her husband was hit by a BMW car in Mumbai's Worli area.

“The Mumbai hit-and-run case is very unfortunate. I am talking to the police to take strict action. Anyone who is guilty will be prosecuted. We will deal with everyone equally. Whatever happens, the investigation will be legal and fair. The law is equal for all, and the Government sees every case in the same manner. There will be no separate rule for this accident. Everything will be done as per the law. The police will not shield anyone,” he said while talking about the road accident, which took place on July 7.

Driver fled the crime scene: police

According to a police officer, the incident happened at 5.25 a.m. near Atria-The Millennium Mall on Dr. Annie Besant Road in Mumbai’s Worli. The victim who died in the accident has been identified as 45-year-old Kaveri Pradeep Nakhawa, a resident of the Koliwada area of Worli.

After sourcing fish from Sassoon dock in Colaba, Kaveri Nakhawa, and her husband Pradeep Liladhar Nakhawa (50) were heading back to their usual spot in Worli to sell fish — a daily routine for the couple. But, a speeding luxury car (identified as a BMW) rammed into their Suzuki scooter and the Nakhwa couple lost control of the scooter, a police official narrated.

“Mr. Nakhwa fell off the scooter to another side, whereas his wife fell on the car’s bonnet. The car continued to drive, dragging the victim, Ms. Nakhwa, for about 100 metres before she was thrown on the road. Instead of stopping the car, the driver continued to drive and after the woman was thrown on the road, they fled the crime scene,” the official said.

“People at the accident spot, rushed Nakhawa to the nearby Nair Hospital, where she was declared brought dead by the doctors. Her husband is undergoing treatment,” he said.

The Worli Police Station has registered a case under Sections 105, 281,125 (b), 238, 324 (4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with Sections 184,134 (a), 134 (b), 187 of the Motor Vehicle Act.  “The BMW car in the crime is No M. H. 48, A. K- 4554, it has been taken into custody. Further investigation of the crime is going on and accordingly, the driver of the car, Rajesh Shah and the person who was with him at the time of the accident named Rajrishi Rajendra Singh Bidawat have been detained for investigation,” a police officer from Worli Police station said.

Aaditya Thackeray meets victim’s husband

Reacting to the development, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and local MLA Aaditya Thackeray said, “Today, I visited the Worli Police Station and met the senior police officers who are investigating the hit and run case in Worli.”

“I will not go into the political connections of hit-and-run accused Shah, but I hope the police will take swift action to nab the accused and bring him to justice. Hopefully, no political shelter will be given by the government. MLC Sunil Shinde and I met the victim’s husband Pradeep Liladhar Nakhawa, and promised him that we will do everything to get justice,” he said.
