The new greenfield airport, built by the Airport Authority of India in Hirasar village (25 km from Rajkot), was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2023. This is the third incident of infrastructure failure at Indian airports in under a week after Delhi’s Indra Gandhi International Airport and Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur Airport.

One person died and six others were injured in the Delhi accident with the terminal suspending flight operations.
