Surat building collapse: Seven killed as rescue operation underway

Death toll in Surat’s six-floor building collapse incident has risen to seven on Sunday. More than d dozen people were injured in the incident.

Several migrant textile workers and their families stayed on rent in the building that collapsed. The building was in dilapidated condition. Seven people were rescued by the authorities but it was unclear how many are still trapped under the rubble.

In a press statement , Rajesh Parmar, Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 6), said, “Seven dead bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem to the hospital.”

He added that a woman had been saved.

The 23-year-old woman has been identified as Kashish Sharma. Following her rescue, she was taken to New Civil Hospital and was in stable condition.

Many others are feared trapped in the collapsed building’s rubble. However, the exact number of trapped individuals remains unknown.

The building was constructed in 2016-17, Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot said on Saturday.

Around five flats were occupied, mostly by those who work in factories in the area, he said.
