Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sule on Thursday (September 26, 2024) suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should inaugurate the new phase of the Pune Metro virtually, as he has already inaugurated the ‘same’ project five times previously.

She also called Union Minister Amit Shah’s recent two-day visit to Maharashtra to meet BJP leaders and allies ‘strange and interesting’ as their focus was not on serving the city but on ‘finishing’ her father, NCP (SP) Sharad Pawar, and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray.

Mr. Modi’s planned visit to Pune on Thursday (September 26, 2024) was canceled due to heavy rains. He was scheduled to flag off a Metro train in Pune, alongside launching several development projects valued at over ₹22,600 crore, including three PARAM Rudra supercomputers for the nation. Developed indigenously under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) and Solapur airport.

“It is unfortunate that we missed PM Modi’s visit. In Maharashtra, it is our culture to warmly welcome guests. But I would like to remind the PMO that this would have been the sixth time the same Pune Metro project was inaugurated,” Ms. Sule, a four-time MP from Baramati in Pune district, said.

“So, I request the PM to inaugurate the Pune Metro online. It’s the same project he has already inaugurated five times, and this will benefit the people of Pune. We shouldn’t wait for his next visit for this,” she added.

During his earlier visits to Pune, Mr. Modi has inaugurated various phases of the metro project.

Ms. Sule pointed out the ‘coincidence’ that exactly five years ago, Mr. Pawar had received a notice from the Enforcement Directorate. “Now, five years later, with elections approaching, they are once again targeting Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray. The BJP appears to lack capable leadership, which is why they are bringing in leaders from other parties,” she said.
