Mumbai rains updates: After heavy showers, rain intensity likely to dip

IMD has issued a ‘red’ alert for Kolhapur, Satara, Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts in Maharashtra, predicting very heavy rainfall

Heavy showers lashed Mumbai and suburbs over the last 24 hours but the rain intensity is likely to reduce on July 14, as per the weather department. The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘red’ alert for Kolhapur, Satara, Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts in Maharashtra, predicting very heavy rainfall on Sunday.

In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, the Colaba observatory in south Mumbai recorded 92 mm rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory (representative of western suburbs) recorded 142 mm rain, as per the IMD data. The MeT department has predicted less intense rain activity in Mumbai on Sunday.

The agricultural regions of Marathwada and Vidarbha received less intense rainfall compared to Mumbai and other coastal areas of Maharashtra in the last 24 hours. The weather department has predicted low-intensity or scattered showers in these areas on Sunday.

    The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported the following average rainfall in Mumbai from 8 a.m. on Saturday to 8 a.m. on Sunday.

    - Mumbai City: 95.51 mm- Eastern Suburbs: 115.81 mm- Western Suburbs: 131.51 mm

    It said the city will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall occurrences in both the city and suburbs, with isolated areas possibly experiencing extremely heavy rainfall.

    Mumbai received heavy rainfall overnight from Saturday to Sunday, causing significant waterlogging in multiple areas across the city, including the vicinity of the international airport. 

    The IMD has issued a Nowcast alert, forecasting intense rainfall in isolated areas of the neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts for the next 3 to 4 hours.

    “Intense spells of rain are expected in isolated areas of Raigad and Thane districts over the next 3-4 hours,” the IMD said.

    IMD issues red alert for Maharashtra’s Raigad, Ratnagiri; predicts extremely heavy rainfall on July 14

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on July 13 issued a red alert for the coastal districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri, and Kolhapur and Satara in western Maharashtra, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on July 14.

    The IMD has issued an orange alert for Thane district for July 14 and a yellow alert for Mumbai, forecasting moderate to heavy showers in the city and suburbs with a possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
