Information Commission set up

NEW DELHI: The Union Government has constituted the Central Information Commission (CIC) under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which came into force on Thursday.

It will consist of five members headed by the former Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Wajahat Habibullah. The other Central Information Commissioners are: A.N. Tiwari, O.P. Kejariwal, M.M. Ansari and Padma Balasubramanian.

Mr. Kejariwal was the former Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharti, Ms. Balasubramanian was former Secretary of Posts and Mr. Ansari is a professor in the Jamia Millia Islamia University. Mr. Tiwari, who is now Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training, will have to seek voluntary retirement before he joins the Commission.

Under the RTI Act only retired bureaucrats can be appointed to the post. The CICs will hold office for five years and are not eligible for reappointment.

No CIC can remain in office after he has attained the age of 65 years.

The salary and allowances are as payable to a Chief Election Commissioner.
