Microsoft is Adding Two New AI Features to Clipchamp

Microsoft will update its terrific Clipchamp video editor with support for AI-based background and noise removal capabilities. The company says these features are free and available now for consumers and school or work (Entra ID) customers. But I don’t see either of them, so perhaps they’re just starting to roll out.

Here’s what’s new. Or coming soon, I guess.

Background removal. Now, you can right-click a video clip or image in the timeline and choose “Remove background” to create a green screen-like effect. Then, you can layer any image or video under that clip so that it visually appears to be behind it. You can also apply image background removal to images with objects in the foreground to create your own stickers, Microsoft says. Whatever that means.

Noise removal. Similarly, you can select a clip in the timeline and open the Audio pane (which currently displays “Volume” and “Detach audio” features ) to access a new Noise suppression toggle. When enabled, Clipchamp will automatically remove any background noise in the clip.

Microsoft has been slowly improving Clipchamp this year. These new features follow the audio recording and text-to-speech editing capabilities it announced in February and the silence removal and other new features it revealed in April. Clipchamp is available for free on the web and as a standalone in-box app in Windows 11.
