AMD's new consumer CPUs reportedly suffer a slight delay — Ryzen AI 300 Strix Point launch seemingly pushed to July 28

AMD may be preparing for a double whammy with Strix Point and Granite Ridge.

Initially scheduled for a July 15 release (confirmed by retailers), AMD's next-generation Ryzen AI 300 (Strix Point) series has seemingly run into a minor setback. Hardware whistleblower Golden Pig, who has a reliable track record with processor leaks, believes that AMD has pushed the Ryzen AI 300 launch to July 28, just a few days before the Ryzen 9000 (Granite Ridge) launch.

AMD never provided an exact launch day for Strix Point or Granite Ridge, but only broadly referred to a July release. Therefore, Strix Point isn't technically delayed in the chipmaker's book.

Golden Pig didn't explain why AMD has purportedly moved the Ryzen AI 300 series launch by two weeks. But given that these chips are readily inside devices, we doubt it's a production problem. The setback is likely a logistic issue. Therefore, consumers who are readying their wallets for AMD's mobile Zen 5 chips with RDNA 3.5 graphics will have to wait almost until the end of the month. As per Hoang Anh Phu, another leaker, the review embargo for Strix Point is also July 28, so consumers will have to hold off until the same day before they can see the level of performance that Strix Point brings to the table.

July 28 is a Sunday, meaning AMD will launch Strix Point on the weekend. It's plausible that the chipmaker picked this specific date so Strix Point aligns with Granite Ridge, rumored to hit the market on July 31. It will be an exciting week for the hardware world since AMD's mobile and desktop Zen 5 offerings are arriving just days apart. Meanwhile, Intel doesn't have an answer for either Ryzen lineup yet.

Intel has previously stated it will ship Lunar Lake, which will compete with Strix Point, in Q3 for the Holiday Season. Therefore, Lunar Lake may not be on the market until December or early January. Meanwhile, Arrow Lake, Granite Ridge's rival, is slated for a Q4 release, so the chips could turn up in October, the same month when Raptor Lake came out two years ago.

AMD seems to have the upper hand in both cases since its Zen 5 chips will be on the market first. Particularly, Granite Ridge may garner more attention due to Intel's ongoing instability issues on the 13th Raptor Lake and 14th Generation Raptor Lake Refresh Core i9 chips. Therefore, cautious buyers may consider what Granite Ridge offers for their next upgrade before contemplating Arrow Lake.

    That's actually an important point you have raised.

    And it is of concern as well, because recently as per a report from "ZDNet Korea", which is somehow related, Intel's 13th & 14th Gen CPU issues are causing headaches for motherboard vendors/manufacturers, as they fear that these current issues might as well affect Arrow Lake's "launch schedule" as well.

    The performance improvement of Intel's 14th generation core processor was not significant, and stability issues arose after mid-April, leading consumers to choose AMD Ryzen processors instead of Intel processors. This trend is expected to grow further when the Ryzen 9000 series processors with the new architecture are released in July.

    If the stability issue is not clearly resolved, consumer distrust will increase, and sales of ‘Arrow Lake,’ a new processor for desktop PCs that Intel plans to release in the fourth quarter, will decrease.

    So, AMD might have a gap to fill in the markets for now, as the report further suggests that Team Red is seeing higher popularity in the retail sector, exceeding 55% in sales.

    Definitely seems like better timing for AMD than Intel as although that latter will have new product out by the holiday season, AMD will have had several more months to saturate shelves and warehouses; it definitely seems like a great marketshare increasing opportunity. That and indeed Intel's ongoing Raptor Lake instability issue is embarrassing and has actually kind of burned their board partners.

    Wonder if the two week "delay" is due to them now anticipating even more demand than previously? That's my first line of speculation on this -- that they want to stock the shelves and e-shelves more before launch day.

    I'm also curious if they are pushing the mobile and desktop launches together to not give an indication of performance numbers for the desktop parts. While the mobile and desktop parts have different TDP and other characteristics, they are both based on Zen 5 and people could go buck wild predicting the performance of the desktop parts. Maybe they want big sales of both parts before reviews start hitting?

    My guess is that they want a little more time to work on drivers.

    Strix Point has a bunch of changes. Larger NPU, 16 CUs iGPU after 2 gens of 12 CUs, first appearance of RDNA3.5 which will likely only be in APUs. But the big one is dual-CCX, 4 big and 8 small separated with different amounts of L3 cache, after 3 gens of 8 cores (with Renoir being the last to have dual-CCX). They're going to want to leave a good first impression.

    Annoying, since already waiting ⏳ , but OK if the delay is mild just to get it right/clean at launch.

    A 3rd potential, and way more annoying possible reason, after stability/drivers and volume, is if AMD is waiting for M$ to provide CoPilot+ certification for launch because their marketing material centered on that, if that's the case I'm going to be MysteryMen level of Mr Furious ! 🤬

    Any more of a delay and I will think it's just typical AMD blowing another opportunity to strike while they are hot (which has been the default).

    Hopefully it's not to build stock, because the avg person doesn't even know this is coming, so get it to enthusiasts & business channel's hands ASAFP (although corporate does like stability, we also love samples early to test), then worry about avg Best Buy(er) volume once that initial demand is met. Delays to those first two categories affect perception of ability of AMD to follow-through which also creates noise that affects investor confidence regarding their ability to capitalize on the mobile market opportunity given to them on a silver platter.

    Although, of course, could be some clusterflop flaw, which I F'in 😡 hope not , after waiting and only getting a couple of 7945HX+4080/4090 (which are now harder to come by) instead of a dozen a month or two ago, so now kinda hard to turn back or wait for Halo. SOOoo hope not! 🤞

  • Over at the AIB board channel forums, ASUS has strongly debunked and refuted this rumor/claim. As per an official ASUS rep some of their Laptop Models are indeed landing up on 15th of JULY 2024 !

    So approach any Tweet you read online cautiously.

    Did AMD ever actually redesign the exploding IO die?!
    Because crashing* is still many times better than exploding* ...

    * that you can avoid by lowering settings

  • Yes, I have already noticed that. I suppose some Laptop models will still come out on 15th, at least based on the claim made by ASUS rep. But let's wait for see how this pans out.
