iBiMED GreenLab: an example of good sustainability practices at the University of Aveiro

Biomedical and biological research laboratories produce substantial amounts of plastic waste, much of it disposable. At the Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED) at the University of Aveiro, scientists are increasingly aware of the disproportionate environmental footprint of their research. Through ongoing awareness-raising, even more colleagues are becoming aware of the importance of integrating sustainability practices into biomedical research. Environmental sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an area of active effort at the University of Aveiro.

iBiMED GreenLab is a grassroots initiative, composed of volunteer researchers, students and technicians, with the aim of promoting sustainability practices allied to high scientific research quality in biomedical research.

Goal of the Month | August 2024: Goal 16

Goal 16 is about promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. People everywhere should be free of fear from all forms of violence and feel safe as they go about their lives whatever their ethnicity, faith or sexual orientation.

However, High levels of armed violence and insecurity have a destructive impact on a country’s development. Sexual violence, crime, exploitation and torture are prevalent where there is conflict or no rule of law. Governments, civil society and communities need to work together to find lasting solutions to conflict and insecurity.
